According to a lawmaker of the Nigerian parliament, the extremist group Boko Haram, who have recently swore allegiance to the new caliphate self-declared by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, is responsible for the disappearance of more than four hundred people. The victims consist mostly of women and children, who are taught to have been taken as slaves by the Islamists of Boko Haram. The abductions have been committed over the last several weeks, and they are a part of an offensive led by Boko Haram in the northern part of the Nigerian Federal Republic, as the terrorists attempt to take Northern Nigeria back under their illegitimate control.
Maina Ma’aji Lawan, who is a senator of the Nigerian parliament, has affirmed that abductions in the zone have started to happen since this years` January. According to him, the Boko Haram insurgents have committed kidnappings mostly in the Damasak town, which is located in the northeastern part of Nigeria. Also, several villages that are located near the town have been intruded by the Boko Haram extremists and people inhabiting them have become victims of the Islamists` abductions. Lawan added that even his hometown, Baga, located in the same area, as Lawan is a senator representing the Northeastern Nigeria, was targeted by the Boko Haram. He says that over 70 women were taken from Baga and probably are being held as hostages or slaves.
“These women and children were not just kidnapped last week. The Boko Haram members have kidnapped many women whenever they take over towns and villages. It is after the towns have been cleared that the reports of the kidnappings have begun to surface”
added senator Maina Ma’aji Lawan, emphasizing that this is a situation that has started months ago and represents a grave danger to the Nigerian society.
It is possible that Boko Haram`s crimes are a response to the counter-offensive led in the north and in the east of Nigeria, by allied forces of international origins. These forces have started to gain victories against the extremists. So the Islamists may have wanted to transmit the signal that they won`t give up, even if the counter-attack is of impressive proportions or power. After all, what leads them intro battle may be outside reason`s borders.
These abductions have been reported almost a year after the tragic event of April 2014. Then, kidnapped approximately 300 schoolgirls thus drawing attention upon their criminal actions.
