STATES CHRONICLE – Tyrannosaurus rex, was one of the most dangerous predators of its time and scientists believe that the dinosaurs owed its success to its intelligence, size, and very sharp senses. However, what they do not know is how the T-Rex came to possess these qualities.
This mystery has recently been unraveled by the discovery of a so-called missing link – a relative of the T-Rex, which scientists believe can shed light on how the dinosaur evolved. This new dinosaur, also from the tyrannosaur family is called Timurlengia euotica and has lived about 90 million years ago, a time when there is a large gap in the fossil records of tyrannosaurs.
Although the newly discovered fossils are just fragments, given that they are the only ones ever found to belong to that time gap, scientists are more than happy to analyze them and find whatever they can about the great dinosaurs.
The new fossils belong to a Timurlengia, which was as big as a horse. The T-Rex that came 10 million years after was the size of a tractor-trailer truck. This means that the dinosaurs evolved to the said size in a very short time, but rather late in the stages of their evolution.
The skull structures of the T-Rex are similar to those of the Timerlungia which means they evolved very early. In other words, the T-Rex was first smart and then big. The researchers tried to create a model of the inside of the skull looking for sensory structures. The brain of the early dinosaur was a miniature replica of the basketball size brain of the T-Rex.
One of the T-Rex’s best abilities was its hearing which was hypersensitive. This was because one bone in their ear was extremely long, the cochlea. The size of this inner ear bone is associated with hearing low-frequency sounds as well.
However, the structure found in the Timerlungia’s ear does not resemble the T-Rex one, so the evolution of hearing might have gone more slowly.
Nevertheless, discovering this new fossil which belonged to a dinosaur living in one of the time-gaps is indeed very helpful in finding more interesting things about tyrannosaurs and how the evolved into the most dangerous creatures of their time.
