Secondhand Marijuana Smoke Could Be More Dangerous Than We Believe

March 27, 2018 By Janet Vasquez Leave a Comment

In the US, the officials are trying to lower the number of people who smoke cigarettes. Paradoxically, the laws on marijuana are more and more permissive. According to a new study, the marijuana smoke can be even more dangerous that the smoke from regular cigarettes. This research showed that secondhand marijuana smoke has an impact on the arteries that is 3 times bigger than the one of regular cigarettes.

Is Marijuana Smoke Dangerous?

To conduct the study, the researchers tested both marijuana and cigarette smoke on mice. They observed that the secondhand smoke from tobacco expanded the arteries for half an hour until the body recovered. Meanwhile, secondhand marijuana smoke hindered the expanding of arteries for more than 90 minutes before the body recovered.

The researchers mentioned that most people think marijuana is safe because it is natural. Despite this fact, marijuana smoke still causes health problems, just like regular cigarettes do. What’s new is that even secondhand marijuana smoke has an impact on your health. While the health community focused on the secondhand cigarettes smoke, they were unaware about the effects of marijuana smoke.

Secondhand Smoke Damages Your Health Too

It is important to understand that secondhand smoke from any source has an impact on health. Even though the researchers were unable to show why secondhand marijuana smoke has this reaction on the body, it shows that it is better to avoid both marijuana and cigarettes smoke as much as possible.

The CDC mentioned that the cigarettes smoke contains more than 7,000 chemicals. From these, over 70 are known to cause cancer. Researchers mentioned that marijuana still needs to be tested before they can know for sure whether it is healthy, and if it doesn’t have any side-effects. Until we’ll have more information on this topic, it is better to avoid inhaling secondhand marijuana smoke if you want to avoid health problems.

United Airlines Under Fire after Dog Dies in Overhead Bin

March 14, 2018 By Janet Vasquez Leave a Comment

United Airlines Held Accountable for Dog Death

A woman and her child claim that the family dog died after a United Airlines flight attendant stuffed him inside an overhead bin.

A family traveling to the United States declared that the flight attendant ordered them to stuff a 10-month-old puppy in an overhead bin, as animals are not allowed on the aisle. The puppy was later found dead. Allegedly, the incident occurred on the 12th of March 2018 on a United Airlines plane.

United Airlines Flight Attendant Denies Knowledge of Puppy in Bag

Catalina Robledo and her 11-year-old daughter still mourn the passing of Kokito, a 10-month-old bulldog puppy, who dies asphyxiated during a United Airlines flight. The details of the events have been revealed by Sophia, as her mother is not fluent in English.

According to the 11-year-old, the incident occurred on the 12th of March. Upon boarding the plane, Sophia and his mother kept Kokito at their feet in a carrier. Allegedly, a flight attendant came to them and told Robledo, and they are not allowed to keep the baggage at their feet and must place it in the overhead bin.

Despite Sophia and Catalina telling her that there’s a dog inside the bag, the flight attendant insisted. Reluctantly, the two agreed, and the flight attendant began stuffing the bag with Kokito inside the narrow bin.

To their horror, Catalina and Sophia could hear the puppy whimpering and barking from inside the compartment but could not get up from their seats to help him as the plane was experiencing turbulence.

Conclusion

Later, the two would retrieve the bag only to discover that the puppy was not breathing. After confronting the flight attendant, the woman swore that she did not know that there was a live animal in there.

However, Sophia and Catalina said that the woman was lying through her teeth because she grasped the bag and felt something moving inside of it.

Following the incident, a United Airlines spokesperson declared that the company assumes full responsibility for this unfortunate event and that it has launched an investigation.

Florida Woman Gets Bashed by Aggressive Otter While Kayaking

March 7, 2018 By Janet Vasquez Leave a Comment

Otter

A Florida woman required medical attention after being attacked by an aggressive otter.

A 77-year-old woman from Florida was attacked by an aggressive otter while on a kayaking trip with her husband. Following the attack, the woman’s boat overturned. The victim was taken to the hospital where she required a couple of stitches and rabies shots.

Otter Attacks Woman. Victim Tries to Hit it with Paddle

Sue Spector, 77, recalls being on the Braden River with Marty, her husband, and a group of people when the incident occurred. The woman told a news outlet that, on Sunday, she decided to go out with her husband on the kayaking trip, as the weather was perfect.

She recalls the first part of the trip as being something out of a fairytale, with her kayak gently running across the water, as the rest of the group floated away from her. Spector remembers telling her husband, at some point, that she saw an otter sitting on a log.

However, when Spector pointed out the gentle creature, the otter left the log, swam to Spector’s boat, jumped in and started bashing her.

The woman remembered that the furry creature bit and scratched her in an aggressive matter as if it was provoked or rapid. Hearing his wife’s calls for help, Marty steered towards Sue’s kayak and attempted to hit the otter with his battle.

The creature fought back and managed to overturn Marty’s kayak, before diverting its attention towards his wife. Sue also remembers using her paddle in an attempt to drive off the enraged otter, but to no avail.

In the end, the creature managed to overturn Sue’s kayak as well. With two boats in the bag, the otter returned triumphantly to its nest. Following the incident, the Florida woman and her husband were taken to the hospital. Sue needed several stitches and a couple of rabies shots.

System Shock Remastered Delayed, Nightdive Studios CEO Announces

February 19, 2018 By Janet Vasquez Leave a Comment

System Shock

System Shock Remastered placed on standby, while devs focus on sequel.

Stephen Kick, the founder, and CEO of Nightdive Studios, the company which bought the rights of the System Shock series, recently announced that the team is taking a raincheck and that the remastered version of the game will not be coming out anytime soon.

System Shock Remastered Delayed or Cancelled?

As far as gaming history is concerned, few know that System Shock spearheaded the innovative move that will give birth to open-world first-person perspective games. Being considered the spiritual parent of the Bioshock series and the recently-released Prey Remastered, System Shock is without a doubt, one of those games that stays with you, no matter when you’ve finished it.

Back in 2013, Looking Glass Studios, the creator, and distributor of System Shock decided to leave the gaming scene, selling all the intellectual rights of the franchise to the insurers.

Several months later, Kick, who learned about the company’s downfall, would track down all the parties who owned the rights to the franchise and spend a ludicrous amount of money in order to buy them.

Three years later, Kick announced that his game studio, Nightdive, will be working on the remastered version of the game. This version would have been built on the Unity engine and compatible with high-end PCs.

As for financial aid, Kick and his studio started a Kickstarter campaign. Within a couple of months, Nightdive Studios’ bank account contained the very round figure of $1.3 million, funds which should have been used to hire devs and put the final touches on the game.

Unfortunately, after two years of tinkering, Kick announced that his company has put the project on hold for the time being and continue to work on System Shock’s sequel. Moreover, the company’s CEO declared that this doesn’t mean that the project has been abandoned, merely that the team is taking a breather and reflect on where they want to go with this game.

Traffic Noise Could Kill You, New Study Suggests

February 8, 2018 By Janet Vasquez Leave a Comment

Traffic Noise

New study points out that loud traffic noise could be harmful.

If you think that loud traffic noise is only bothersome and can somehow be blocked out, then you’re in for quite a surprise. A recently published cardiological study reveals that not only is traffic noise bothersome, but it could also kill you.

Should You Be Concerned about Loud Traffic Noise?

You should, according to a study published in the Journal of American College of Cardiology. The study points out that loud background noises such as sirens, exhausts, and horns could potentially prove a serious health issue.

Previous papers revealed that traffic noises could disrupt the normal sleep cycle which, in turn, could lead to various health problems such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular issues. In addition to sleep-related issues, the authors of the study point out that loud traffic noises could also elicit a hormonal stress response which, over time, can irreversibly damage the heart muscle.

Thomas Münzel, the lead author of the study, pointed out that several years ago, people would find loud traffic somewhat annoying. However, since the upscale of the automotive industry, traffic sounds are not only bothersome but potentially fatally as well.

Although there is no direct correlation between sounds and heart issues, Münzel, who has studied for some time the effects of sound pollution on the human body, surmised that phonic pollution should be considered a risk factor.

More than that, the new study pointed out that everything over 60 decibels can potentially be harmful. For comparison, a car’s exhaust backfiring or honking in traffic can produce a 70-decibel noise. Prevention-wise, Münzel stated that sleep quality could be significantly improved by using a noise dampening machine.

Conclusions

Unfortunately, the study’s lead author commented, that white noise machines are only temporary solutions, as lawmakers have to take matters into their own hands in order to reduce noise pollution.

YouTube Now Enables Vertical Videos on iOS

December 24, 2017 By Janet Vasquez Leave a Comment

YouTube mobile app logo on a smartphone

YouTube finally decided to adopt vertical videos on the iOS version

STATES CHRONICLE – YouTube comes with great news for iOS users, as their version of the app has received a long-awaited update. Until now, users had to watch vertical videos with the unaesthetic black bars on the side. Now, the app is up-to-date, allowing users to watch these videos properly when entering the full screen mode.

The iOS version of YouTube didn’t display vertical videos properly

Whenever iOS users entered YouTube and wanted to watch a vertical video, things got less pleasant as soon as they opted for full screen display. The black bars were present and, if users wanted them gone, they had to tilt the device on one side or another to view the video properly. Therefore, YouTube decided it was time to change.

At first, they announced such a feature in August, and it took them several months to turn it into a real one. The feature has been available on Android phones for two years, so the company thought it was time to offer it to iOS users as well. However, there might be one slight problem.

YouTube needed to adopt the changes and suit the modern times

Some videos were especially recorded for this non-vertical display, meaning that they have the black bars encoded in them. This means that, even if the app will now allow vertical videos, the bars will remain visible. However, the update remains a huge achievement for YouTube.

This feature was popularized by Instagram and Snapchat, which promoted vertical videos and got users used to it. Therefore, YouTube had to adapt, and make sure people get what they expect from the video app. Also, given its popularity and the broad type of content it offers, it was necessary for it to be suitable for these modern times.

Bye bye, black bars. 👋

Now the YouTube player on iOS will automatically adapt to the shape of the video you’re viewing! pic.twitter.com/4jzJ6nPj4G

Cracked Smartphone Screens Are a Thing of the Past – Self-Healing Polymer Gets Fixed Just by Pressing It

December 20, 2017 By Janet Vasquez Leave a Comment

Samsung Galaxy S2 with a shattered screen

A new self-healing material will make cracked smartphone screens a thing of the past

STATES CHRONICLE – Cracked smartphone screens are one of the most acute problems among smart device owners, as the screens are quite feeble and easy to break. However, a team of researchers from Japan found a creative solution to this problem. Instead of making the screens from stronger materials, they created a glass which can heal when it gets broken.

The self-healing material was invented by mistake

This healing material was created by accident by a graduate student. Yu Yanagisawa was attempting to create a glue, when the result turned into a solution for cracked smartphone screens. After he was done with the material, he discovered it exhibited a strange behavior.

If he tried to break the material, it could be reverted to its initial unbroken state after applying pressure on the cracks for about 30 seconds. This was possible only at room temperature, but the material could still heal on its own. Also, if he let it sit for several hours untouched, it could regain its initial strength.

The resulting material was a polymer, polyether-thioureas. However, the self-healing accident wasn’t the first attempt of the type. So far, researchers have created concrete, plastic, and rubber which could heal. Not even in terms of cracked smartphone screens was this unique, as Motorola had already got a patent for a device which mended its own cracks under heat.

This is probably the best solution to cracked smartphone screens

However, the polymer is special because it can heal at room temperature, making it more user-friendly. If the technology would be borrowed by phone producers worldwide, it could start a new smartphone era. Before releasing its self-healing screen, Motorola made a survey and revealed that half the Earth’s population had broken a smartphone screen at least once in their lifetime.

Therefore, offering such an easy-to-make solution to cracked smartphone screens would greatly reduce the number of thrown devices and replaced screens. This self-healing polymer is a great alternative to the feeble glass used for these screens. The Japanese researchers have put up a paper on this great material, and was published in the journal Science.

Bing Improves Its Search Results with the Help of AI and Reddit Integration

December 16, 2017 By Janet Vasquez Leave a Comment

Bing logo on a white background

Bing is making use of new means to improve its search results

STATES CHRONICLE – Microsoft has great news for Bing users, as the search engine will get loads of exclusive new features. The updates are meant to improve the searching experience and bring out better results. This will be possible thanks to the AI technology which will be integrated in the search engine, as well as the inclusion of Reddit and all its subreddits.

Bing search gets better with the help of AI technology

One of the first new features Bing will get is Intelligent Search which, as expected, will make use of AI. The option will let users interact more with the search engine, thus allowing it to improve its results. Intelligent Search comes paired up with Intelligent Answers, which is a way for Bing to check its results and constantly improve its techniques.

However, that’s not all Bing has prepared for you. From now on, it will offer more complex answers, depending on the question you have asked. It will provide comparisons, and a comprehensive analysis of the issue you are interested in. Also, if there are many options which can count as an answer, it will display all of them instead of just choosing the most popular.

Image search will improve as well. By making more use of the AI technology, Bing will perform image recognition. Therefore, when you search for pictures of a certain objects, the search engine will be able to tell apart objects present in an image which might not be mentioned in its description.

Bing will integrate a quick Reddit search

The Reddit search engine still needs some improvement, but it’s still a big step ahead. From now on, users will be able to search directly a subreddit they are interested in, and get a glimpse of the posts and conversations on a topic.

Also, they can find anything related to the Reddit field, by just entering one search term. Bing will keep you connected to live Reddit sessions, just like the AMAs (ask me anything) made by celebrities, or will give you links to those conversations which have already taken place.

Follow Your Interests on Instagram by Directly Following Hashtags

December 14, 2017 By Janet Vasquez Leave a Comment

White hashtag on a blue background

Instagram becomes more interest-oriented with the hashtag following

STATES CHRONICLE – Instagram is an app which shows you the photographic content shared by the friends, artists, and celebrities you choose to follow. The platform hasn’t been much about interests, but this is going to change soon. It will roll out an update which will allow you to follow various hashtags. This way, you’ll see posts related a certain topic.

You will soon be able to follow hashtags on Instagram

Whenever you wanted to find posts related to a certain topic on Instagram, you had to go to the Explore tab, and search for the hashtags you were interested in. Now, the new update will automatically show you posts related to a hashtag you like, once you follow it.

However, this change cannot be implemented immediately. First of all, Instagram needs to make sure that harmful or spam content ends up delivered to the users through this hashtag following mechanism. Once this is fixed, users will get the chance to explore their interests more, and go beyond the posts of their social community.

This technique might also offer Instagram some valuable information on custom ads. Instead of bothering users, they could look what they’re interested in judging from the hashtags they’re following, and then show them personalized ads. However, the platform said this wasn’t their purpose.

Instagram will prevent spamming by downgrading the posts of low quality

The testing of this hashtag following system started last month, but the update will start rolling out today. If you tap the pages associated with hashtags, you will get a Follow button as you enter them. Then, you will be displayed the best posts related to your interests, judging from their quality and from when they were posted.

Once something you don’t want to see will pop up in your news feed, you’ll be able to downvote it by selecting the menu in the right corner. This way, Instagram will be able to tell when this technique is used for spamming, and will prevent these posts from appearing in the news feed.
