STATES CHRONICLE – People are most likely to produce greater changes in the climate than nature. Now, when the Trump administration is bound to annihilate any environmental regulation, researchers have developed an equation that proves the outrageous effect of our deeds on the climate. The human impact on climate is much bigger than nature’s impact.
People are blamed to have altered the environment approximately 170 times faster compared to natural forces. Moreover, the equation indicated that industrial societies have the same effect on climate as the strike of an asteroid. Prof. Will Steffen from the Australian National University and Owen Gaffney of the Stockholm Resilience Centre has developed the “Anthropocene equation,” publishing his paper in the Anthropocene Review on February 10.
The equation has proved that nature has monopolized the climate for 4.5 billion years while in the past 60 years, humans have taken control over the weather. Nevertheless, a terrifying conclusion of researchers was that at a time when Trump designates climate activism as a threat, the equation is tangible evidence that the efforts of industrialized societies in the next several years will severely impact our planet for millennia to come.
Gaffney explained his and Steffen’s discoveries in a paper in New Scientist last Friday, on February 10. Homo sapiens hold the power of controlling nature. Humans handle the changes which occur in our planet’s system. Industrialized societies are bound to alter this world in such a terrible way that it was compared to the hit of a meteorite.
Thus, the Anthropocene, the new geological period which was proposed by scientists defining human’s activity which controls the environment, is most likely described in slogans. Researchers tried to develop a mathematical way to represent those arguments. However, this unique act is a statement which signals that industrialized societies are bound to take risks during a period when action is crucial.
Trying to keep everything simple, Will Steffen together with Gaffney developed an equation by revealing the rate of change of the life support system on our planet, including the diversity of life, the ice layers, waterways, wetlands, forests, oceans, and atmosphere.
They calculated that for four billion years, the rate of change of the system of our planet is a complex function which uses cosmic and geophysical forces to which internal dynamics is added.
