STATES CHRONICLE – The Food and Drug Administration recommends women to limit their use of lead in cosmetics. This component is present in shampoo, lipstick and eye shadow. Acknowledging the fact that the purpose of FDA is to protect public health at a global level, they had determined the level approved for the use of lead in different cosmetic products manufactured by various companies.
Lead represents one of the metals which occur naturally, causing severe heath issues affecting the kidney and the brain. This type of metal is very dangerous once in the bloodstream. Moreover, the harm produced by such a metal is irreversible. FDA has decided to formulate new guidance to impose a particular limit on the use of lead by all pharmaceutical and cosmetic companies in the US.
Authorities have suggested the use of only ten parts of lead in one million which could be implemented in lip glosses, lip liners, and lipsticks. What is more, this limit of lead in cosmetics becomes a rule for those laboratories which produce external cosmetics like blush, body lotion, shampoo and eye shadow.
Considering the recommended guidance issued by the FDA, every person needs to know that the limit of lead does not apply to other products such as hair dyes. These contain lead acetate. Leslie Kux, an associate commissioner at FDA, claimed that the document published on FDA’s official website does not impose any rights for anyone and neither does it bind persons.
The new guidance only unveils FDA’s thinking regarding the use of lead in cosmetics. Kux had further noted that in the US usually the less known brands which might also be cheaper contain this dangerous metal. However, famous big brands use a limited amount of lead in the manufacturing process of their cosmetics.
The FDA has also taken the opportunity to refer to other cosmetic companies from other countries outside the US which also use high levels of lead. This is disgraceful. FDA is keeping an eye on all these firms which do not respect their clients, jeopardizing their state of health. The seriousness of this problem has transformed into a growing concern since the US also imports many other types of cosmetics from several brands from other countries.
FDA’s goal is to decrease the level of lead in manufacturing makeup and reducing its absorption in the blood while licking or swallowing lipstick.
