STATES CHRONICLE – You might want to rethink your dinner plans for tonight, as pizza boxes are unsafe, according to the FDA due to the chemicals commonly used to repel oil or water. The Food and Drug Administration implemented a ban on three specific compounds that might be damaging to the health of the costumers.
The organization ruled for banning three types of perfluoroalkyl ethyl containing food-contact substances (FCSs) that are often used in food packaging. This includes the cardboard of pizza boxes and the paper of microwave popcorn. Their use is to keep both oil and water from damaging their package. They are also used on non-stick pans, food packaging, waterproof jacket, and numerous other products.
Exposure could be oral, dermal, or through inhalation. The biggest risk though is, naturally, oral, where 95% of the chemicals are essentially absorbed into the body. These can negatively impact our health, causing cancer, hormonal effects, high cholesterol, and increasing the risk of birth defects or development problems. Experiments have shown such effects on rat subjects, but the FDA stated that the same would happen to humans.
The agency has, thus, implemented a ban for the use of those particularl chemicals since January 4th, 2016, but they’re not out of practice just yet. Any company in the food industry will have 30 days to remove the chemicals from their products and find a replacement. According to the FDA, luckily there are only a few companies that still use those three chemicals for packaging.
Erik Olson, director of the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) commended the FDA’s ban, but stated it’s just the beginning. There are seven other chemicals that their experts and government agencies, such as the National Institutes of Health, have found to be just as harmful. It’s a step forward, but it’s only that, just one step. There are several more substances that require the same fate.
It’s best not to risk it, and the population is avidly advised to watch out for packaged food and avoid certain products. Anything that contains oil or water repellant may hold one or a couple of the potentially harmful chemicals. That also means that all should avoid non-stick pans that are often laces with the perilous substances. They are not to be heated above 450oF, and when they show sign of deterioration, they should be tossed out.
It has already been revealed that the three banned substances contain carcinogenic properties, but more are still being researched.
