STATES CHRONICLE – It seems that Sony is in the news every day recently. After offering multiple deals, like two PS4 bundles for $300 each, and a 45% discount for one year of PlayStation Now, Sony is in the news again with a nice offer. Sony offers free online multiplayer for the PS4 this weekend.
The company offers a free weekend of online multiplayers to those PS4 owners without a PlayStation Now subscription. The offer will be available starting Friday, Dec. 11, at 12:01 a.m. PT until Sunday, Dec. 13, at 11:59 p.m. PT.
The players are urged to turn on their consoles and open their favorite multiplayer game, as they will be given free access to it during the specified times. Once the weekend is over, the free multiplayer will also be over.
Not only that, but PS4 owners will also have the opportunity to play the Battle of Jakku mission from the new Battlefront game for free. Additional games that will be playable for free will be Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 and Destiny.
One of the nicest parts about the move is that the users will not, at any time, be prompted to join the PlayStation Now service. They will be allowed to enjoy their free weekend of gaming excess without any annoying pop-ups or notifications.
This is kind of a weird move, and not a lot of PS4 owners will be allowed to take advantage of it. Since most PS 4 owners already have a PlayStation Now account, they will not really get anything out of the experience.
This might be one of those moves that show that an apparently stable feature belonging to a company might actually be in trouble.
By itself, this event shouldn’t mean much. However, if we are to take into account the PlayStation Now year-long discount offered last week, as well as the decreasing numbers of PlayStation Now subscribers, we can paint a fairly decent image.
One of the company’s highest paying features, PlayStation Now, regardless of the online multiplayer and other benefits it offers, might be dying. Unless Sony does something about it, it is estimated that within two years the feature might be killed off, and multiplayer will be available for free, like it is the case with the PlayStation 3.
