STATES CHRONICLE -Gene activation can be seen for the first time. If have ever been curious what happens to your brain and what kind of changes are taking place in there, now you are able to find out. According to a new study, scientists developed, for the first, a new imaging way to see how genes are activating in our brain.
The study was released in Science Transnational Medicine. The researchers explained they had deployed their compound in rats and primates, but now they are testing it by using human subjects. Their attention was focused on a certain enzyme, called histone deacetylases (HDACs). It is implied in many neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s or depression. They managed to track the molecules using scans of the subjects’ brain.
What they discovered was amazing. It seems that the HDAC levels were higher in the cerebellum and lower in the white matter, the amygdala and the hippocampus. All the patients had almost the same amount of the molecule, in the same places in the brain. Researchers are trying to do more studied as they want to find out how the molecule can change for itself and what are the effects it has on the human brain. Gene activation is an important topic for the scientists.
If they could manage to understand more about them, maybe we could be able to find out how can we cure neurological disorders or, at least, prevent them. However, this is a huge step and we are hoping more discoveries will be made in the future.
If you did not know by now, in a traditional PET scan the tracers are attached to glucose, responsible for our energy. So the areas where the glucose ended up were the parts of the brain which were the most active. The things have changed and now they are using this molecule which is attached to enzymes that switch off genes. The fact that the gene activation happens in similar areas of the brains for all the subjects could really help scientists to understand more about how the human brain is working.
Knowing where to start could help us develop better treatments for Alzheimer’s as no cure has been found out by now. Who knows, maybe in the future researchers will be able to prevent this disease from happening. Being able to see gene activation for the first time is a huge discovery for us.
