Nowadays, there are many unhealthy factors which can lead to an earlier risk of mortality. Smoking is the most dangerous of them as an impressive number of people (1.2 billion) is still struggling. Even though some progress has been made in getting Americans not to smoke, it seems that, in some communities, there is still a high smoking rate.
Bridgette Garret, an associate director for health, in the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Office on Smoking and Health, said that even though the cigarette smoking rate was declining, smoking is still a major problem in some racial and ethnic groups. The U.S. government is now trying to come with better strategies to reduce tobacco use in these subgroups.
Between 2010-2013, smoking rates fell to three percent for whites and blacks. Moreover, US. Hispanics, Native Hawaiian, and other Pacific Islanders saw a significant drop regarding this matter, with more than 8 percent. The real problem was found at the American Indians and Alaska Natives. It seems that they don’t want to leave behind this bad habit, as the smoking rates risen from 36 percent to 39 percent.
The government has some strategies in order to decline the high smoking rate. They are using hard-hitting media campaigns, higher prices for tobacco products and promotions of cessation treatment. All these proved useful to reduce smoking rates in the past, so they will sure use in the future too. We will see if the U.S. government will manage to convince as many people from those racial and ethnic populations to stop smoking.
Smoking is the main cause of preventable disease and death in the United States. Every year, more than 400000 people die because of tobacco use. Furthermore, there are also thousands of people with smoking-related diseases. Smoking is causing cardiovascular diseases, respiratory issues, cancer and other health risks such as stillbirth, low birth weight or bone health. The study shows that nine out of ten lung cancer deaths are caused by smoking. In the past few years, more women died from lung cancer than from breast cancer.
The high smoking rate is and will be a huge problem as long as we keep on having bad habits for our own health. Cigarettes can harm any organ of our body and cause many diseases. Quitting smoking lowers our risk for tobacco-related problems and can add years to our life.
