STATES CHRONICLE – Although this season brings us a lot of joy it’s also one of the most stressful times of the year and the holidays can put pressure on your mental health.
The holiday season has already started with Thanksgiving, but as time goes by things are getting more stressful and we feel like we don’t have enough time to do everything we’d like. Besides our usual schedule which includes work and probably some hobbies or personal projects, for the holidays we also have to go shopping, we enter a house-cleaning frenzy and many of us are also spending hours in the kitchen. So how can someone do all of this when we barely had time for work a couple of weeks ago?
Average healthy people, although stressed out, they manage to cope with everything and even have a good time as they mostly focus on the good things of the holidays: spending time with the loved ones, sharing presents and eating great food – this mostly depends on everyone’s tastes.
On the other hand, for people who deal with problems such as depression or anxiety, it is more difficult to focus on the bright side of the holiday season and therefore, become even more stressed out, depressed or anxious than usual.
We have to understand that for people dealing with mental illness, many things or tasks may seem a lot more burdensome than they are to us. For example, if they have to go shopping, the crowds from the stores might put more stress on them and make them feel more anxious. In case someone refuses an invitation for the Christmas dinner, the depressed could suffer twice as much as an average person, even if the person cancelling is not someone close.
What people with mental problems need to do is to make sure they take care of themselves on the holiday season and try to maintain their stress level at a minimum. This means you may have to let go to some of the things on your to-do list. Bear in mind that you don’t have to do everything or be everywhere. You can always ask your friends and family to take over some of your holiday-work-load.
People should be helping each other on the holiday season, after all this is what this season is about so make sure you give a hand to the ones who look like they are more stressed than you are.
