According to local news reports, a Kentucky clerk got arrested after rejecting gay marriage on accounts of religious beliefs. Ms. Davis ignored the Supreme Court’s ruling on same-sex marriages, which prompted authorities to arrest her.
James Yates and William Smith Jr. have been involved in a same sex relationship for a long period of time. Given the Supreme Court’s ruling on gay marriages, the couple decided to make their relationship official on Thursday, but their plans fell apart when the clerk refused to marry them.
Ms. Kim Davis has made many marriages official during her years as a Kentucky clerk. There are, however, certain limits that she is not willing to cross, such as, same sex marriages, which she considers incredibly immoral.
This was the reason why the woman refused to marry the gay couple on Thursday and chose to go to jail instead. Judge David Bunning made her an offer that could have released her, namely, he asked the clerk to pass a ruling that would enable deputies to acknowledge gay marriages in Kentucky.
Ms. Davis said she preferred to stay true to her beliefs and refused the judge’s proposition. Consequently, she is still imprisoned on accounts that she did not observe the Supreme Court’s ruling.
Although gay marriages are now possible on the U.S. territory, opinions are still strongly divided. There are clerks who agree to marry gay couples and clerks who strongly oppose them.
Ms. Davis has now become the role model of all anti-gay clerks, who believe same-sex marriages should not be allowed because they are not religious. 120 clerks in Kentucky support Ms. Davis’ decision to reject the gay couple. They strongly protest against the judge’s decision to send her to jail because they think clerks should have the right to choose what couples they should marry or not.
Kim’s husband has the same opinion on gay marriages, too. He was seen in front of the courthouse on Friday afternoon while his wife was waiting for the final verdict. He, too, considers that the Supreme Court’s decision should not force clerks to do something that is against their will and beliefs.
