STATES CHRONICLE – Knowing the signs of cardiac arrest could save a life and sudden cardiac arrests might not take you by surprise anymore.
Usually recognizing the symptoms of a disease will make you have a quicker reaction and either prevent the disease from happening or begin treatment sooner which will definitely improve your chances of getting better.
For example, in case of a stroke there are signs that can indicate you what is happening such as a crooked smile or not being able to form sentences that have sense. However, for cardiac arrest it was not yet known whether there are any warnings. During a cardiac arrest heart beats are stopping slowly and not suddenly like in the case of a heart attack.
Thankfully, a research has been conducted with the hopes of finding some sort of warnings for the phenomenon. The study was conducted in Portland, Oregon and included studying medical records of people who had cardiac arrests as well as speaking to friends, family and witnesses to the event.
The findings showed that about half of the patients who were middle-aged experienced different warning signs of the cardiac arrest. Most of the symptoms presented a month before the cardiac arrest which could have given both the patient and his or her doctor the time to do something about it.
Unfortunately, in 90 percent of cases so far, patients realize they need medical care too late. The main reason for asking help so late is that patients, although observe the symptoms, don’t take them seriously enough or don’t necessarily link them with cardiac arrest.
The problem with these symptoms is that they can be misleading, making people think they have indigestion. The most frequent symptoms are shortness of breath and chest pain. Moreover, if you have a history of heart disease such as heart attacks or inherited disorders, you should really pay attention to such symptoms and get medical help as soon as possible.
Also, if you have heart problems you should consider implanting a heart defibrillator which will shock your heart in case of cardiac arrest and save your life. If you don’t have such problems but you want to help the others, you should pay attention to the symptoms mentioned above and also learn CPR.
