Pollution in the United States has become a serious reason to worry about. Studies have shown that many U.S. cities have reached a critical pollution level.
Even though there have been made serious efforts into diminishing the air pollution in the United States, its cities are still threatened by toxic air. Almost half of the American states present an air that is dangerous to breathe, stated reports from the American Lung Association.
The situation has improved all over the country but pollution has still remained at high levels in many of the cities, affecting almost 138.5 million people. The information has been released trough The State of the Air 2015 Report Card.
The report has shown that the most ozone polluted city in the United States is Los Angeles and was placed on the fifth position for its high levels of particle pollution.
Ozone is one of the most common air pollution factors and it comes out of a chemical reaction between sunlight and the toxins released by cars, factories, among others.
Among the cities who were ranked as having the cleanest air are Elmira, Cape Coral, Bismarck and Salinas.Dayton, Cincinnati and Columbus have been declared one of the cleanest cities of this year when it comes to short particle pollution.
To everyone’s surprise New York did not make it in the top ten of none of the categories and was placed on the 11th position for its smog levels.New York has surpassed 47 times the level of smog presented by the standard of the country.
The area of Cleveland Akron Canton is among the regions with the highest level of pollution. The northeastern part of Ohio has been classified as the 10th metropolitan area with the greatest particle air pollution out of 220 regions across the country.
This area got better “grades” when it came to analysing other type of air quality, more precisely it ranked the 32nd most polluted zone when it comes to short term particle and the 27th position most ozone polluted.
The research has shown that many cities have become cleaner as they have taken several official measures. The climate change and the global warming has contributed to the increasing of air pollution.
Air pollution can have a serious impact on health by participating in the development of several breathing diseases like asthma, lung cancer, heart diseases and can even shorten life.
The constant change of the climate is making air cleansing efforts harder and it makes it more difficult to protect the health of human beings, state the report.
Four out of ten people are affected by air pollution and children are the most at risk.Pollution can influence a baby while is still in the womb of its mother, by decreasing its birth weight, the normal development of its brain and functions, stated previous studies.
It is obvious the entire country has shown significant progress, but there are many other things that need to be done in order to decrease air pollution and its devastating effects on the human health, explained the authors of the study.
