STATES CHRONICLE – NASA is working on a plan to develop better spacesuits equipped with a more advanced system of dispensing astronauts’ residues. Until now, astronauts managed to cope with spacewalks in the orbit of our planet and they also survived the challenged of exploring the moon. NASA needs to implement a technology which will help astronauts fulfill their basic needs during a space journey.
Astronauts were trained to contain themselves during a long space trip into the orbit or to use a diaper attached to their spacesuit to accomplish their needs, spending both launches and landings in this space diaper. They find relief when using the waste systems from the spaceship in orbit. NASA hopes to receive some ideas from the public, working on designing better spacesuits.
Officials from the space agency have launched the “Space Poop Challenge.” They argued that they need to build a system which can be attached to the spacesuit, capable of retaining human waste for approximately 144 hours. The system must remove the waste away from the body into a container without the use of hands.
What is more, this overcomplicated system needs to be functional during a space trip where microgravity controls gasses, fluids, and solids moving around. The public’s ideas need to be signed up for the competition until December 20. The first three innovative ideas will be awarded $30,000. The competition started last month, and for those who did not sign up yet, they still have time to access it and try to win.
Richard Mastracchio, an astronaut, updated information regarding the competition by divulging the damages that can be caused due to a poorly generated human waste system. Since 1972, NASA has not launched spacecraft with astronauts aboard out of our planet’s lower orbit.
In case they need to fulfill some needs and cannot postpone them, they can reach home in a few hours. Mastracchio also claimed that people need to take into account that NASA plans to launch astronauts into longer journeys, to the Moon and even to Mars. In this case, it will be compulsory for them to make use of better spacesuits bound to help them manage their needs for days.
NASA is prone to design a spacesuit which will offer astronauts water, nutrients, and oxygen to survive for approximately six days. Unfortunately, the current system used to dispense human waste only lasts for six to eight hours. The system will need some updates to help them surpass stressful situations.
