A new species of Pterosaur has been discovered in China on Thursday. The flying reptile looked similar to one of the creatures from James Cameron blockbuster Avatar and was named after it. The new found pterosaur lived 120 million years ago and it was baptized Ikandraci avatar, which means “Ikran dragon from Avatar”. The new species of pterosaur looks oddly enough like the flying dragon-like creatures that lived in the fictitious Pandora and were managed by blue human-like creatures. It appears that once again James Cameron proved to be a visionary as the creature from his movie did live on Earth a long time ago.
The paleontologists say the new species of pterosaur had a throat pouch similar to that of a pelican and it may have feed on small fish from freshwater lakes. Scientists also believe that the pterosaur flew low over the water and it stored fish in the pouch.
Xiaolin Wang, paleontologist at the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing said that the head structure of the new species of pterosaur resembled the creature called Ikran from the movie Avatar.
It is known that pterosaurs were the first flying vertebrates on Earth, followed by birds and bats afterwards.
New Species of Pterosaur had a pouch-like throat
The new species of pterosaur found in China did not have a crest on the elongated head like other pterosaur species did. At the back of the lower jaw crest they had a hook-like structure that looks like to have been some kind of anchor point for the pouch under the throat. The pterosaur had small teeth for catching fish and lived in warm regions along other feathered dinosaurs, mammals, birds, frogs, turtles and other species.
