In an appalling finding, the scientists have suggested a link between obese moms and their baby’s premature deaths. According to the study, children of obese and overweight women have a higher risk of dying early by the age of 55. The scientists claim that these children are prone to develop cardiovascular diseases and face higher risk of dying from heart attacks.
It is said that the children born to obese mothers are 35% more likely to die before they reach 55, the study says.
The maternal obesity has very fatal outcomes on the health of the child. The child of obese moms may suffer from fetal distress, obesity, hypertension and metabolic disorders later in life. They also have a 29% increased chance of being admitted to hospital for heart related issues, angina and stroke than those born to mothers of a normal weight.
Obese Moms Study
The scientists carried a study on 37,709 babies delivered between 1950 and 1976 in Scotland who were now aged 34 to 61. Their mother’s weight was recorded during her first antenatal appointment in pregnancy.
The results found that the offspring were 35% more likely to have suffered an early death from any cause by the age of 55 if their mother had been obese during her gestation period (body mass index of 30 or over).
Other factors which could also contribute to their offspring’s age includes mother’s age during pregnancy, socio-economic status of mother’s family, sex of the baby, birth weight of the baby and their current weight were also taken into account.
The findings also suggested that overweight in pregnancy may cause permanent changes in appetite control and energy metabolism in the unborn child, leading to a greater risk of heart problems later in life.
So, try to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Maintain a healthy weight dear would be mothers.
