During a flight of the SkyWest company, which was heading to Connecticut, three people lost consciousness out of unknown reasons. Due to this, the plan had to be diverted and the pilot had to make an emergency landing on Buffalo Niagara International Airport just before noon.
The plane left from O’Hare International Airport of Chicago and was supposed to land on Bradley International Airport from Connecticut. On board of the flight there were 75 persons.
A representative of SkyWest stated that one of the passengers of Flight 5622 lost consciousness and the pilot was obliged to descend the plane more than 20,000 feet.
The plane had to be descended to an altitude of 10,000 feet as there the air is more breathable.
An update of the situation, confirmed that there was a total of three persons who had lost consciousness while they were on the plane. The airline did not mention if the fainting of the two other persons happened before, during, or after the descent of the plane.
For the pilot to reach an altitude of 10,000 feet he had to bring down the plane at a speed of 7,000 feet per minute, as this was the number shown by the flight tracking service,FlightAware. The descent lasted eight minutes.
The spokesperson of the airline said that they didn’t know the exact factor that made the passengers to feel sick and lose their consciousness.
The plane landed safely and the ill passengers received immediate medical help. Other 15 persons along with two children have also been checked by the medical staff but they didn’t require further medical assistance and none of them was transported to the hospital, explained the airline representative. But it appears that the oxygen mask of the plane were not functional.
One of the passengers on board, explained that the aircraft’s staff told them to keep breathing and that at one point they felt the plane diving. The fast descending was extremely scary and felt as if the pilot had lost control of the plane and it was going to hit the ground, added the passenger.
An initial assumption was hinting towards the fact that the plane might have had dealing with a pressurization problem, but this supposition was not correct.
The plane has been examined by authorities and the maintenance staff and none of them have noticed a problem with pressurization or with anything else on the plane. Even so, the investigation is continuing.
