A study showed emulsifiers from processed food are bound to develop gut cancer.

STATES CHRONICLE – A study which involved mice proved that some ingredients, like emulsifiers, found in processed food could cause cancer. Many producers tend to use all sorts of ingredients bound to keep their products fresh, but they forget about the effect of those chemicals on the human body. The processed food is one of our health’s worst enemies.

Nowadays, people cannot trust any brand of food because all of them are using different quantities of dangerous chemicals which can harm our body. Some researchers conducted a study which was recently published in Cancer Research magazine and proved this theory.

When these ingredients were tested on mice, they demonstrated that emulsifiers are bound to generate the perfect conditions for the development of colon cancer. These chemicals called emulsifiers, which in some cases are detergents, are added in foods to blend the water-based ingredients with the oily ones.

Emulsifiers aim to keep all the ingredients in a homogeneous mixture. Some food regulations imposed limits to the amounts of emulsifiers used in particular foods. The rules were meant to restrict the amount, but not the number of emulsifiers which can be used by producers.

Emilie Viennois, the one who led the study and also part of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences at Georgia State University, has argued that emulsifiers have edited the structure of the healthy bacteria present in the mice’s guts. The dangerous changes which happened there have helped the evolution of the metabolic syndrome.

This represents one of the risk factors for the development of terrible diseases like heart disease, obesity, and diabetes. All these types of illnesses have been related to the inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Unfortunately, some of the IBD can activate the growth of tumors.

Viennois struggled to reveal proofs for the fact that emulsifiers caused colon cancer. She developed a trial bound to analyze the evolution of some mice. She fed them for three months with carboxymethylcellulose and Polysorbate 80, two types of emulsifiers standard on processed food.

She has revealed that mice who were fed with such dangerous ingredients developed modifications in the gut microbes which started developing the perfect environment for tumor growth. She has discovered that these terrible emulsifiers once in the stomach can trigger the development of cancer.
