The annual competition Punkin Chunkin was cancelled this year.

STATES CHRONICLE – The Science Channel has announced the canceling of ‘Punkin Chunkin’ competition after a pumpkin cannon accident that injured two persons.  One of them was the video producer of the show, and he needed to be hospitalized due to his critical condition. The competition ‘World Championship Punkin Chunkin’ took place on November 6th. The particular edition was planned to be aired on the Science Channel.

The accident caused by a cannon explosion determined the cancellation of the TV show. The channel’s team has expressed its regrets concerning the crash, praying for the recovery of the injured people. This event is an annual tradition. This year, its ending was not a cheerful one. The cannon called ‘Pumpkin Reaper’ unhooked and launched a massive metal piece which hit a woman.

The 39-year-old female was severely injured. Another man was hospitalized, but fortunately, he did not experience threatening wounds. The witnesses argued that the woman was struggling to run from the blast, but she got hit by a metal object. The massive piece of metal was as big as a car door. The contest was over after this accident occurred.

Many of the spectators were shocked, running away from the explosion. Others had gathered around the injured woman after they had heard the crack of her helmet when she got hit. She was immediately flown to the hospital to get medical support. The announcer had immediately stated the cancellation of the Punkin Chunkin competition.

The contest was first held back in 1986. Last year, the annual competition got canceled too because of the organizers did not receive any support. They were not able to get an insurer who was willing to help them establish the event in proper conditions. The organizers needed protection for fans and spectators, but also for the entire location of the event. Punkin Chunkin initiators were waiting to receive support for the organization of the contest.

Unfortunately, they did not obtain the support of any insurer, being extremely disappointed to call off the event. A lot of spectators and fans were also dissatisfied with this decision, but they were hopeful when waiting for this year competition. Unfortunately, the event transformed into a tragedy. Probably, for next year, the organizers need to assure improved protection for all their spectators and the staff, verifying their competition tools.
