STATES CHRONICLE – Specialists argue that global warming will cause terrible sea level rise which will affect the whole planet. Based on the current situation, they assumed that the level of the sea would increase even more than expected, reaching about 20 feet in height in the next centuries. On January 19, scientists explained that governments’ efforts on fixing the climate change problem need to be even greater. Previous evidence indicated an ancient warm period.
The studies helped experts establish more about the future. In the past century, sea levels have increased by approximately 8 inches due to a thaw of ice from Greenland to Antarctica which has slowly melted, enriching the levels of the oceans. Several studies have proved that these rising temperatures represent the effect of global warming which fueled a rapid melting process.
Nevertheless, a new study published in Science magazine has confirmed that sea temperatures from about 125,000 years ago in an average warm period were not that different from the ones who were registered in the past few years. What is more, they were said to be even hotter, recording about 2 degrees Celsius more than scientists have previously believed.
Jeremy Hoffman, a scientist at Oregon State University who also led the study published in Science magazine, argued that this situation needs to raise awareness for environmentalists and governments keeping in mind the idea that sea levels registered a 20 to 20 feet rise above their current height during the last interglacial period.
Experts have analyzed the sediments of the deep seabed which contained chemical signals concerning the rising temperatures from 83 different sites. However, specialists stated that it could take thousands of years for these rising temperatures to cause the thaw of immense ice layers. Andrew Watson, a professor at the Britain’s University of Exeter, has indicated that the new study is bound to reveal that in the future sea level rise will register an increase of six meters due to the rising temperatures.
He also claimed that scientists’ hope is that these rising temperatures will slowly increase to allow the whole planet to adapt, including us and all the animals in their continuously changing ecosystems. The bad news is that in time all the coastal city areas may be covered in water.
