Seagate Announces 5mm Ultrathin Hard Drive

In April, Western Digital had announced its first SSHD hard drive called WD Black SSHD. They have also announced WD Blue SSHD which comes without a flash memory. SSHD stands for solid-state hybrid drive which is a combination of solid-state storage drive and regular hard drive in one type of hard drive.

Now, Seagate has unveiled its answer to the WD’s Blue hard drive. At the Computex 2013 event Seagate announced the ultrathin hard drive that measures only 5mm in thinness. The hard drive has been specially designed for laptops and tablets. The hard drive measures 2.5inch and will be available into storage capacities of 320GB and 500GB. It comes with a strong steel exterior instead of aluminum.

Standard hard drives that are designed to be used in laptops, measure 7mm or 9.5 inches in thickness. Seagate announced that that a 500GB laptop ultrathin HDD would cost only $89. The price is quite less compared to the flash memory that is utilized in ultrathin laptops and tablets. The new hard drive from Seagate only weighs 3 ounces.

The drive comes with a standard SATA port which makes it easier for you to use in most desktops and laptops. You do not need to make use of any adapter or cable to use it on other systems. On the other hand, the hard drive from Western Digital comes with an innovative card connector. The Ultrathin HDD also supports the most recent SATA 3, SATA 2 and SATA.

Also, the Ultrathin HDD will be able to protect when it falls accidentally. TheZero-G Sensor technology automatically senses a fall and covers the hard drive head which helps in safeguarding your data.

Seagate had already demonstrated the hard drive in September last year. Seagate claims that the idea behind manufacturing such an innovative product that consumes less space was to create more space for manufacturers of tablets and laptops to add larger batteries and create good space for air circulation. Leading PC makers like Asus, Dell and Lenovo have already decided to make use of the new Ultrathin HDD from Seagate. The strong support that they are getting from OEM partners shows that they are ready to try the revolutionary product on their forthcoming products.
