Rumors have it that Sony Corp. is working on an innovative new smart device. Sony’s upcoming e-ink smartwatch will have an electronic paper screen and it is set to be released somewhere at the beginning of 2015.
Sony’s upcoming e-ink smartwatch will have the face and the wrist band made of a patented material which will allow the entire surface of the watch to function as a display and can also change its appearance. Sony’s new smartwatch doesn’t have a name yet but it will be announced as soon as possible, the company said.
Sony said that their upcoming e-ink smartwatch will be more of a stylish accessory rather than a super innovative tech device. Sony said its new smart wearable device will not be competing with other smartwatches like the Apple Watch or even Sony’s own smart watch.
Sony’s upcoming e-ink smartwatch will focus more on appearance and Sony is hoping that this will help them stand out in the wearable market. Even though the market for smart wearable devices is still a small one, with only 22 million gadgets sold worldwide in 2014, experts are forecasting that it will grow in the next five years.
Sony’s upcoming e-ink smartwatch is not the first smartwatch to ever use the electronic paper technology, though. Pebble Smarwatch also uses an e-paper display. The real novelty will be the way Sony will incorporate the e-ink technology within the watch’s wrist band.
Sony’s new smartwatch will be one of the first products to be part of the new Sony creative division led by CEO Kazuo Hirai. The new division will include services and products which don’t usually fit in Sony’s current business model.
This recent news comes after Sony announced that it will streamline the TV and smartphone line-up in order to cut costs and improve the company’s decreasing profits.
According to speculations, Sony’s upcoming e-ink smartwatch could make its debut at the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show in January. The official date has not been announced yet but we’re hoping it will be made available soon.
