A new report revealed Starbucks drinks have excessive sugar amount. It was found that a variety of Starbucks products contain almost 25 teaspoons of sugar per serving. CNN declared Starbucks drinks have more than three times sugar than recommended. Also, they contain more sugar than Coca-Cola, which has nine teaspoons per can.
The report was carried out by a British organization, Action on Sugar. The group is claimed to be created by experts on sugar products and their effect on people’s health. Its aim is to advise individuals how to consume less amounts of sugar in order to prevent health issues.
Action on Sugar organization found that hot grape mulled fruit chai tea contains the highest sugar level compared to other Starbucks products. They stated the largest size of this tea has 25 teaspoons of sugar. This is the same amount of sugar in five chocolate muffins. Such a quantity is equal to 100 grams of sugar. Compared to the adult daily intake of seven teaspoons per day, 25 teaspoons sounds alarmingly high.
Action on Sugar claimed most of the Starbucks products are inaccurately perceived as healthy. Moreover, a venti-sized white chocolate mochafrappucino with whipped cream comes with 18 teaspoons of sugar. The famous Starbucks hot chocolate in venti size also contains 15 teaspoons of sugar. The same-sized chai latte has 13 teaspoons, while the pumpkin spice latte contains 10 teaspoons of sugar.
Experts on health issues claim excessive sugar leads to many health problems, such as obesity, Type 2 diabetes, tooth decay and cardiovascular issues. According to the American Heart Association, men should consume a maximum of 9 teaspoons of sugar per day, while women should only have 6 teaspoons. Action on Sugar group asked UK Prime Minister, David Cameron, to take action based on the evidence brought forward.
Kawther Hashem, nutritionist and researcher for Action on Sugar, said such products should be consumed on occasional circumstances. In addition, she claimed Starbucks drinks shouldn’t be turned into daily drinks as they can cause serious health problems. However, Starbucks became a worldwide brand and people buy their hot drinks on a daily basis.
As Hashem explained, “They are laden with an unbelievable amount sugar and calories and are often accompanied by a high sugar and fat snack.”
Action on Sugar claims Starbucks released a statement, saying that it’s planning to lower the sugar amount in their drinks by 25 percent over the next years. Also, the company mentioned it will replace sugar with natural sweeteners and sugar-free syrups. The fact that scientists found that Starbucks drinks have excessive sugar should give consumers another perspective regarding the products they buy.
