Loosing an iPhone might leave a hole in your pocket if you are not informed good enough.
Erin Pace, a young wife and mother stated that while participating a parade, she had to go to the bathroom and she forgot her iPhone in the baby stroller. When she came out she realized that her phone wasn’t there anymore and that someone had steal it.
Even more, the person turned the device off so it couldn’t be tracked. She decided to call AT&T but the news she received was didn’t make her content at all.
It seems she was told that since her phone didn’t have an insurance she had to pay an amount of $649 to have it replaced, news which overwhelmed Pace since the price of a brand new iPhone 6 is $650. If she wished to go for an older model of iPhone, like the iPhone 5, she had to pay a total amount of $450 as she was not eligible for a new phone discount with a new contract of two years.
This situation seems to have happened before and many iPhone users don’t know that the warranty offered by Apple covers just broken smart phones not stolen. The system offers warranty on damage and does not present an insurance policy against theft or loss. Even if clients subscribe for the more expensive option of warranty, Apple Care Plus they wouldn’t not benefit from it if the device was stolen or lost.
Pace was informed that she was only covered if her phone was damaged in some way. For example is the screen got broken she would have to pay $79 for it to be paid.
In case of theft or loss, the one that can offer protection is the mobile carrier a person uses or a third party such as Square Trade. If a client has a family plan he/she can have the phone replaced.
Unfortunately this didn’t apply in Pace’s case as she admitted to being the only person on her plan meaning she couldn’t benefit from the upgrade.
The woman said that she had bought her iPhone directly from Apple’s store but she didn’t see any option offering extra insurance, as she would have taken it.
A representative of AT&T stated that they were unable to offer Pace a new discount phone because it is written in the contract that phone replacements happening before the ending of the two years of contract are not qualified for receiving a discount.
Through this, Erin Pace wished to remind people that the real cost of an iPhone 6 is actually $650 and not $199.
People who want to insure their smart phones against theft should get information from their mobile carrier or companies such as Square Trade which costs around $10 to 412 per month.
