Sony and Panasonic Are Working Together to Produce 300GB Optical Discs

July 31, 2013 By Janet Vasquez Leave a Comment

According to recent rumors, in the near future we will be able to use 300GB optical discs. On Monday, an official announcement was made by Sony and Panasonic that the two companies are working together to create next generation optical discs and it would be ready to use by 2015.

In the past, both Sony and Panasonic have released high storage optical discs. However, now they are teaming up to create the new 300GB optical discs to target professionals. Later on, the product will also be made available for regular consumers.

Talking about the new technology in the making, they stated that optical discs have great properties that allow them to stay protect from various environmental issues. Optical discs are resistant to dust and cannot be damaged by water. Even change in the temperature does not affect the product. It can store wide variety of data formats which means even if new formats come into existence; it can be easily added to any optical disc. Hence, it becomes a perfect device for storing data.

In the past, both Sony as well as Panasonic has created Blu-ray format discs. However, they now believe that the good old optical discs can occupy large volumes of data in the near future.

These days many companies are offering cloud storage services. It allows you to store your data on the server of the company which provides cloud service. Once your data is stored on the cloud, you can access it from any location as long as you are connected to the internet. However, they still require a way to backup the stored files.

Professional firms make use of high storage capacity discs to store data like HD film and transfer files that eat up huge space. Sony and Panasonic feel that in the near future more companies will start offering such huge storage optical discs which will ultimately benefit the consumers.

As we said before, Sony and Panasonic will first focus on providing the large-spaced optical discs to businesses that require storing huge amounts of data for longer periods. According to Sony, their potential customers would be video production industry, broadcaster and cloud storage companies.

At present consumers make use of Blu-ray discs that offer 25GB storage space or 50GB storage space on a dual-layer disc. However, these days even regular files such as documents, and media files use up a lot of space. Anybody can now purchase a 1TB or more hard drive. Even if a user uses a 50GB blu-ray disc, it would require him to use 20 discs to perform a complete backup of 1TB data. Hence, users have switched to options like hard drives and cloud-storage. However, with the introduction of newer optical discs things can change a lot in the future.

Optical discs have various advantages. A blank optical disc is available at a very cheap price. It is light and thin which makes it easy to ship anywhere or send it to a customer or employee. They are easy to dispose.

These days HD quality movies are available on Blu-ray and DVDs. However, in the future 4K video technology will come into play. To make the format available on a optical disc, it would require the disc to have huge storage space like 300GB optical discs which will go into production soon.
