STATES CHRONICLE – Climate change is destroying the planet because of the pollution that causes it. Researchers predict that plants, just as the soil, the water and the air, along with animals and humans will be highly affected.
It appears that when temperatures rise, plants tend to accelerate their metabolic systems which could make them contribute to the greenhouse problem. In other words, instead of giving us oxygen, plants will be releasing CO2 as well.
However, although the plants do indeed release CO2, new research shows that they amount released is only 20 percent of what scientists have previously predicted. To see how much CO2 the plants are producing, a team of researchers from the University of Minnesota looked at the relationship between the metabolism of 1,000 trees and temperature. The trees in the study are from two forests in northern Minnesota.
The scientists warmed up artificially ten boreal and temperate tree species to measure how much CO2 they were releasing. The plants that were naturally from warmer environments showed a smaller rise in metabolism while the ones growing in temperate climates had a more dramatic response to the rising temperatures.
So, the scientists created an artificial simulation of global warming to see how plants are truly affected. This showed that the plants were not going to become a problem or a contributing factor to global warming. However, they will be somewhat affected, and something must be done about the matter.
While we need to protect forests by stopping deforestation, we also need to protect them from pollution and the greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, the world still needs to cut down on carbon dioxide emissions and replace fossil fuels with alternatives that could power devices and produce electricity.
Moreover, we also need to be careful about soil and water pollution as these are also affecting the forests. If we protect the plants from global warming, and it effects, then the level of CO2 released by the trees will decrease and plants will go back to be the most natural source of oxygen we have.
All in all, let’s not rely on plants to save us by giving us air but do something to save forests and save the planet as soon as possible.
