Google Launcher Now Exclusive to Only the Nexus 5

November 7, 2013 By Janet Vasquez Leave a Comment

Nexus 5 may well become a favored smartphone of Google if the report about Google launcher being available only on the Nexus 5 turns out to be true. Verge has brought out this piece of information and they claim they have it from Google direct. The Android 4.4 KitKat OTA update for the Nexus 4 is going to happen soon and then it would be proved if this bit of information from Verge is fact or fiction. If it turns out to be true, then Nexus 5 would no more be an android but rather a Google phone.

Nexus smartphones are being sold not only by Google alone, but by many other smartphone makers. All these Nexus build smartphones have the particular feature that they are pure Android so far as their functioning goes. Some of the vendors however add their own customization to the Nexus variant that they are selling. If Google applies this customized launcher function to the Nexus 5, then it would lose its pure Nexus status.

Verge in its report written by Dieter Bohn mentions about this pure Android look and feel aspect in all the Nexus handsets launched by Google till now. They provide a clean and real feel of Android the report mentions. By adding this exclusive launcher feature in just the Nexus 5, Google would be moving away from their laid down pure Android path.

There is a possibility that the launcher would soon find a place in Google Play Store for other Android users’ to download and install. But as of now it is an exclusive to Nexus 5 feature. There is also the possibility as yet of the Nexus 4 coming with the launcher.

Nexus Owners Petition Google For KitKat Update

November 6, 2013 By Troy Rubenson Leave a Comment

Google Nexus had been launched by Google more than a year and half ago. Google usually supports updates to devices they introduce into the market for a year and half. This was the reason why the Google Nexus has been excluded from the devices that would be upgraded to Android 4.4 KitKat. The KitKat update included all the Nexus devices except for this one make. There is now a petition filed at change.org, which has asked that this device also be included in Google’slist of updates.

Though Google refers to the eighteen month window period for the exclusion of the device, Endgadget has found out that the real reason is quite a technical one. The chipset that is used in the Google Nexus was one made by Texas Instrument (TI). TI have now moved on to other products and therefore the device has no technical support from TI anymore. XDA developer forum also mentions that the GPU binaries of the Google Nexus has been updated.

Another reason that can be thought of for Google not supporting the device is that this being the first Nexus variant in the market to have been retailed via many network carrier service providers, there are many variants of the device out there in the market. Google therefore does not wish to support such variations and rather keep to standard form, fit and function of their devices. Google also faces a problem in getting drivers for the chipset that has no technical support from its original makers. Whatever be the reason, Google would have to take some back lash from the customer base, if they completely ignore their legacy device.

Sundar Pichai, Android Chief should be receiving the petition soon and it is being hoped that some form of mediatory statement and approach to the issue would be taken.

Google Nexus 7 4G LTE Spotted In China Ahead Of US Release Date

August 31, 2013 By Jack M. Robinson Leave a Comment

Google earlier promised to launch its Nexus 7 LTE tablet by late July, but the device has not made its way to the stores. However, just ahead of its release in the U.S. it has broken cover in China.

Simply dubbed as Nexus 7, the new tablet was debuted late last month on the Google Play Store. It includes a big upgrade over the predecessor. The biggest upgrade is the inclusion of 4G LTE that is to replace HSPA+ data speeds.

Google's Nexus 7 4G LTE Spotted In China Ahead Of US Release

The problem now is that Google has not yet released the tablet officially. Google promised to make it available on T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon in next couple of weeks. GottaBeMobile.com writes, “We’ve heard that the Nexus 7 LTE will arrive in Italy, and possibly elsewhere, in September, and it appears that the device has made an appearance before its upcoming release date in markets around the world.”

One user on Baidu has posted several photos of the new Nexus 7 LTE tablet that appeared in China. The pics shows LTE-capable Nexus 7 tablet. It was purchased for about $331 and it appears to be authentic. It is a Wi-Fi only model.

As China Telecom does not support 4G LTE, so the new device is not capable utilizing it, but it is clear it has the network capability and it could run 4G LTE.

Well, this is a signal that the Google Nexus 7 4G LTE is not just a rumored device, and it will be hitting the stores soon.
