Samsung Plans to Launch Its Own VR Headset Before Anybody Else

May 26, 2014 By Georgia Dawson Leave a Comment

samsung VR headsetThis March we were excited to announce you that Facebook closed one of the most important deals in its history: the purchase of the Oculus Rift VR headset. Playing the game of virtual reality is a tough one, not for the gamers themselves, but for the tech giants which feel the need to be one step ahead of their competitors.

Sony invested in its Project Morpheus, soon to be synced with the Play Station 4, while Apple itself did a great job adding the Rescape Game Controller to its portfolio. Facebook followed the crowd and spent quite the money for the Rift and so did the race begin!

But this world also has Samsung, a company which was very well (metaphorically) described by the guys from Cult of Android:

Samsung’s like the spoiled brat you went to school with: they have almost everything, but if another kid comes in with a toy that’s not part of their collection, mummy and daddy will make sure they get it. Rumor has it the South Korean company is now developing its own virtual reality headset that will work alongside Galaxy devices — and it is desperate to get the product to market before Facebook and Sony launch theirs.

Spoiled or not, it seems that Samsung plans to launch its own VR headset in the next two months, according to the rumors and leaks provided by Endgadget. Do not mistake this peripheral with the alleged “Galaxy Glass”, a futuristic gear along the lines of the Google Glass. The Galaxy Glass is said to be showcased this September in Germany, during the IFA tech event and seen as a future competitor to the real Glass.

Samsung’s upcoming VR headset is powered by the Galaxy flagship smartphones and tablets, but a true consumer version is also said to need next – gen Galaxy gadgets, which haven’t been announced yet, of course.

This headset is going to be marketed as a peripheral, as we said, and also advertised as being cheaper than its competitors. As cheap as such device can be, warn us the specialists. So far, it seems that the VR headset is currently under development, but it uses OLED display technology, making it pretty similar to the Rift. Rumors also say that Samsung’s in-house operating system, Tizen, won’t be a part of the future Samsung “Gear Solo”, as the VR was named.

To what purpose Samsung plans to launch its own VR headset?

Samsung fathered a very wide area of wearables and smart devices, so trying to get a bigger slice of the cake is what a good company is supposed to do, especially in an emerging field such as virtual reality headsets. The ultimate goal is to offer Android game players a “mind-blowing” gaming experience and a full immersion in the game. We don’t have other details about this upcoming spectacular device, but stay tuned, as we will find out more!

Facebook Buys Oculus. Virtual Reality Soon to Replace Reality Itself?

March 26, 2014 By Janet Vasquez Leave a Comment

facebook buys oculusIt wouldn’t be the first time when you hear that basking in the online world without limits and obstacles may turn you into a freak of nature, as we seem to replace healthy, significant and real interpersonal interactions with online chatting and news feed addiction.

So for those who don’t remember when was the last time they actually talked to people instead of writing and emoting to them, here is the good news: if you never want to leave the house again, you will soon be able to completely lose yourself in some form of virtual reality, as social networking giant Facebook buys Oculus, the tech company that will soon release the much expected Oculus Rift, the virtual reality gaming headset that was tested by a chosen few and highly appraised.

The 3D headpiece virtual reality device that allows the gamer to fully immerse into the game’s universe is going to be a hit in the world of mobile platforms and the news that Facebook buys Oculus immediately led to specialists clapping in excitement, as this seems to be the second major and best Facebook  acquisition of the year, after the $19 billion investment in the social messaging app WhatsApp.

Why is virtual gaming so profitable and interesting to our tech – driven world? Well, first and foremost, it is giving gamers something they always dreamed of and saw only in science – fiction movies and since gamers represent a huge buying niche, there is no wonder that everybody wants a piece of the cake. Recently Sony announced their new VR gaming headset Project Morpheus that will eventually sync up with Sony PS 4, while Oculus VR was proud to let the world know about their newest Rift version. Even Apple wants to play the game, as recently we presented you with the Rescape Game Controller which can be used as an iPhone accessory and addresses FPS games aficionados.

So there is no surprise that somebody wanted to own the pioneer  of VR gaming headsets. But Facebook among them all? Are we going to finally reach that point in our lives when VR will completely replace reality itself? Are we going to communicate and interact with people or travel and experience places, events and life situations from the comfort of our chairs without needing to go outside? Are we witnessing the early debut of a Wall – E inspired society, bound to VR, fat, lazy and completely separated from everything that defines us as humans?

Sony Reveals New Sci-Fi Looking Project Morpheus Headset

March 19, 2014 By Deborah Cobing Leave a Comment

sony project morpheus virtual realityTechnology has advanced so much in the last 20 years and it seems that nothing can stop it. From apps to hybrid phones to realistic games, there’s nothing that technology can’t do. The latest tech innovation comes from game leaders Sony PlayStation that revealed a new head set that looks as if it were specially designed for a futuristic sci-fi blockbuster: it is a PS4 virtual reality headset called Project Morpheus.

The president of Sony, Shuhei Yoshida has put an end to all the rumors circulating around Project Morpheus headset and revealed at the official Games Developers conference that the future of PlayStation games will be the virtual reality type of games, revealing from under a sheet the prototype model for the Project Morpheus headset.

Yoshida also declared that they have been working on the virtual reality headset for the last three years and that this will not be its final form. The prototype version of this futuristic headset consists of the Sony HMZ head display that comes with a Move controller on its side and can be used for playing first-person games.

Project Morpheus headset specifications

Sony’s virtual reality headset comes with a 5 inch LCD display that has a resolution of 1920Xrgbx1080 resolution, a field of view of 90 degrees, a 3D audio support, DualShock 4 and a compatibility with the PS Move and it places no weight on the nose or the cheeks of the player.

Yoshida also revealed that the Project Morpheus headset mirrors what the player see on a TV display, which allows others to see what the player sees. Only a single virtual headset can be connected to a PS4 console at a time for now.

Another cool feature that was specially created for the Project Morpheus headset is the 3D sound technology that allows the players to hear sounds coming to them from all directions, including from above and from below them.

The release date and the pricing are not known yet but we will keep you updated to any news that will appear in the future.
