West Nile Virus Hidden in Mosquito Bites

July 28, 2014 By James Faulkner Leave a Comment

Mosquitoes from Lincoln County might have West Nile Virus inside of them, health officials from The Vanderburgh County Health Department announce.

After they tested mosquitoes from about 13 pools in the area, they officially made a statement in order to prevent transmission of the virus to humans.  Consequently, decisions have been made to spray the area between Harriet Street, Tennessee, North Garvin and Franklin Streets in Evansville between 8 p.m and midnight.

There is no specific treatment for the infection, once a human being is carrying it. If you are infected with the West Nile virus, you might develop fever, headaches, body pains, even diarrhea or vomiting sensations.  Apparently 1 in 5 persons who contact the virus develop some symptoms and less than 1 % can further develop brain complications that might be fatal. The virus is only transmitted through mosquito bites, not from individual to individual, so you chances of being infected decrease significantly.

West Nile Virus May Become More Common This Summer

As we previously reported, if you had previously developed an infection, you are further immunized and you will not develop it a second time.  A general recovery after the infection is complete, no longtime consequences affect you, but you might feel weak for several weeks or even months after you fully recover.

West Nile Virus is transmitted by mosquito in stale water.

There are several precautions you can take in order to prevent being bitten be an infected mosquito: use some repellant spray or moisturizing creams; dress in light colored clothes an preferably cover yourself as much as you can; search for products containing DEET, Picaridin or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus, which are powerful ingredients working against mosquitoes, but be aware not to do any damage to children, because they are intolerant to several of these ingredients; do all you can to avoid accumulation of standing water, for example in pools, small vessels, flowerpots or clogged gutters; try to avoid being outdoors at  dusk and dawn, since mosquito activity is most likely intense during those time intervals; repair all your windows and doors and  install protective screens that lets the air flow through them.  If you happen to have recycling containers around your house, try to make some holes in them in order to let them breathe.  According to Kota News, the peak season for West Nile Virus activity happens between August and September, so a special attention should be carried out around this period.

The virus was firstly reported by the year 2002. Since then it was in the year 2012 when there was a highest total of 57 cases reported in Kansas.   Precautionary Steps to be taken against the virus, as recommended by KDHE, are as follows:

  • Proper use of insect and mosquito repellents over the skin and clothes that bear an EPA certified active ingredients, lemon eucalyptus oil, Picaridin or IR3535 when outdoors. To apply the repellent, follow the directions stated on the box carefully.
  • Dusk and dawns are considered as the most crucial times as the mosquitoes are pretty active at this time. It is highly recommended to wear clothing that cover your body parts and properly use repellents.
  • Keep the window screens and doors covered to keep the mosquitoes stay out of your place.
  • Don’t make water allocated at nearby places to kill the mosquitoes’ breeding sites. Change the stored water in buckets, pots and barrels.

Keep a count on these points and support KDHE in their healthy mission.
