Windows RT Failure Hurting Chip Makers As Well

December 6, 2013 By Jack M. Robinson Leave a Comment

Windows RT not too long ago was being heralded as the OS that would bridge the tablet and PC divide though that obviously did not happen. And there seem no respite in sight either as all signals point out to the particular Windows version being headed to the gallows. This has also been echoed by Julie Larson-Green the Executive Vice President at Microsoft while speaking at the UBS Global Tech Conference. What he said in explicit terms is that Microsoft is not going to have all three OS, that is Windows Phone, Windows RT and the full scale Windows in future. Windows RT started off well enough and made its debut with the Microsoft Surface device. This was followed by tablets from Samsung, Lenovo, ASUS and Dell also running the Windows RT though all of that has since come to a halt, leaving just Microsoft and Nokia yet using Windows RT. As further proof of things not being well enough with the RT version, it has caused Microsoft to write off a staggering $900 million to account for unsold first gen Surface tablets.

However, the RT has not proved to be a bane for just Microsoft who made the tablets but for the chip makers as well whose processors had made up the core of the tablet devices running Windows RT. This includes Qualcomm, ARM and NVIDIA. Their chips are made to run specifically on the ARM architecture which is what the Windows RT version is compliant with. The Surface 2 tablets for example are made by NVIDIA using the Tegra 4 ARM based chips. Qualcomm have their Snapdragon 800 chip which is also ARM based and has been used to power the Nokia 2520 tablet.

It is not just the one or two tablet projects that the RT and its supporting chipmakers had been banking on for their business. They had plans to take on the PC market piggybacking the OS, thereby making serious inroads into the turn now ruled by the Intel x86 series of chips. There is also the issue of Intel having come up with the Haswell series of chips that are more efficient in performance and battery consumption, making them favored by tablet makers such as Lenovo, Dell, Toshiba and such who have naturally not taken to the ARM chips for their tablet devices.

That RT is not doing well was felt when ARM CEO Warren East had mentioned at the Mobile World Congress in February that RT was not doing as good as it had been hoped to do. Luis Pineda, the senior VP of product management at Qualcomm had spoken positively about RT in May when they were making chips to be used on the Dell tablets that were running on RT.

NVIDIA however had accepted the failure of RT at the very first stages. Jen-Hsun Huang its CEO stated the company had suffered loss to the tune of $300 million due the poor sales of the RT based devices. The NVIDIA Tegra chip is used on the Surface 2 tablets and the company he mentioned did not expect good returns from that investment.

With the end of RT close at hand not only Microsoft but these associated chip making companies face the consequences of their investment not returning results they had hoped.

Nokia Rumored to be Developing 8 inch Windows RT Tablet Named Illusionist

November 5, 2013 By Troy Rubenson Leave a Comment

Nokia’s first tablet, the Lumia 2520 which sports a 10 inch display will be seen along store shelves soon. The tablet is Windows RT based, and is only the second tablet in the world to be so, the first being none other than the Surface 2. Also, the Lumia 2520 would fetch for a price of $499 and above, which could be considered a bit on the higher side considering the tablet runs an operating system that had very few takers in its initial run. This however is not going to be the only new tablet that the Finnish company has up its sleeve. For there already are rumors of an 8 inch model being in the pipeline, which could be named the “illusionist”. This bit of information comes from @evleaks and the Verge. Both have a reputation of being credible, which means there sure is something up there.

Nokia

So far as the 10 inch Lumia 2520 goes, it would be powered by a Qualcomm processor. The Illusionist on the other hand could be powered by an ARM processor making it the first of its type in the tablet sector. The reason why Nokia has decided on the ARM processor is not very clear as the battery usage using Intel Atom Bay Trail line of processors has been found to be same as that of ARM processor based tablets.

Other tablet makers who have their product in the market and with whom Nokia would be competing are Dell and Lenovo who have Windows based 8 inch tablets in the market. These tablets however are powered by x86 processors and hence run the full blown Windows 8.1 version. The 8 inch tablet segment has proved to have more takers than the 7 inch variant, something that can be explained by a mad rush by manufacturers to launch tablets in this genre.

Other news of interest in the Windows based tablet segment is that Microsoft too is rumored to introduce a smaller their in their Surface lineup. The tablets would be 7.5 inch by dimension and release dates are expected to be early 2014. Whether that would run Windows RT or Windows 8.1 is anybody’s guess right now that chances could be that Microsoft might have a tablet running both the Windows versions.

Nokia Lumia 2520 Windows RT Tablet Could Spell Trouble For Microsoft Surface 2

October 24, 2013 By Janet Vasquez Leave a Comment

Nokia is now taking their expertise into the tablet arena as well. Their first product in this line up would be the Lumia 2520 which brings to an end the months or perhaps years of wild rumors of the Finnish company’s tablet ambitions. Over all, the Lumia 2520 makes for a very decent tablet offering, and is equipped with the right tech bits to demand a second glance. It comes with a 10.1 inch 1920 x 1080 pixel full HD display. It has a brightness factor of 665 nit which ensures better visibility even in direct sunlight conditions. Other specs of the tablet include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad core processor clocking at 2.2 GHz and a 2 GB RAM which makes for a very speedy performance credential. Internal memory is a decent 32 GB though users also have the option to add a further 32 GB of external storage via micro SD card slot. For networking it would have support for 4G LTE.

Photography lovers would be happy with the 6.7 MP rear facing camera that has ZEISS optics to it. The front facing 2 MP camera is once again the standard fit for allowing video chat and has the advantage of a wide angle lens. Users would enjoy the sound coming from the stereo speakers mounted at the front of the tablet. For connecting other devices there are the two extra USB ports. For networking the tablet has support for Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, GSM WCDMA, LTE as well as GLONass. The onboard battery pack of the tablet is of 8000 mAh rating which, as per Nokia gives it 10 hours of operation when seeing a video. Another additional accessory that would be of interest is the add-on keyboard which would come with its own battery pack giving extra back up power to the tablet by another 5 hours. Together, this makes one of the best features of the Lumia 2520, something that not many in the business are able to match.

Another specialty of the tablet is Nokia’s claim that 80 percent of the battery would be charged from a zero charge state in just about one hour. As for the operating system for the tablet, it would be the latest Windows 8.1 RT. As of now the market has just one other tablet, Surface 2 running on Windows RT and that too is from Microsoft. Both share quite a similar look and feel and oddly enough, both the tablet comes from more or less the same company now that Microsoft is the new owners of Nokia.

In what could make things a bit difficult for its own distant cousin, sale price of the Nokia Lumia is expected to be around $499 which is the same as that of the Surface 2 from Microsoft. The Nokia however has more color options, like red, blue and black or white and also has cellular connectivity which the Surface 2 does not have.

There are other low cost tablets also in the market that the Nokia tablet would have to compete against. These are based on the latest Intel Bay Trail processors and also have the full Windows 8.1 OS running on them which are compatible with all windows apps ever produced. This is unlike Windows RT that are only compatible with the modern apps downloaded from the Microsoft App Store.

Microsoft Windows RT Price Down to Fight with Apple iPad

June 18, 2013 By Troy Rubenson 1 Comment

Recently, Microsoft had launched a website which showcased how Windows 8 powered tablets were offering more features than the Apple iPad. Now, Microsoft has decided to lower the price of the devices with Windows 8 OS in order to compete with Android and iOS powered tablets.

Windows RT
Windows RT, is a variant of Windows 8 operating system that has been mainly developed for mobile devices that make use of ARM architecture. Such architectures are usually seen on smartphones and tablet PCs. Many vendors like Dell, HP and Lenovo pay certain amount to make use of Windows RT on their devices. Microsoft aims to lower that amount as Windows RT is the version that lets Microsoft to compete with tablets being sold by Google and Apple.

Microsoft feels that reducing the price to vendors is the only way the Windows RT can get the drive to rival against the leading operating systems. Recent rumors suggest that in the near future we will be able to hear news about new devices from Dell, HTC and other brands powered with Windows RT.

In 2012, only few tablets from leading brands like Dell, Asus and Microsoft’s very own Surface RT were shipped with the Windows RT operating system. No one knows how much each vendor pays to Microsoft for using Windows RT OS on their devices.

In the near future, we feel that Windows RT running units should be made available at low price if they really want to compete with several tablets that are running on Android and the iPad powered with the iOS.

At present, the Apple iPad Mini can be purchased for $329. However, its competitor device, the Surface RT is available for $499. Also, other tablets that are powered with Windows RT are available around the same price.

The news about lowering the price on Windows RT came out on the very same day when Acer unveiled the world’s Windows 8 powered tablet. The Acer Iconia W3 is a powerful tablet that can run all the software that is designed to be used on desktop which is not possible with Windows RT. It is powered with Atom CPU from Intel and comes with an 8inch display.

Analysts feel that it is the best time for Microsoft to move the Windows RT ahead by talking with vendors to lower devices powered with the said OS. We have to wait and watch whether Microsoft’s new way of competing with Apple iPad leads to fruitful results or not.

Dell XPS 10 Windows RT Tablet Price Cut, Now Available for $299

May 15, 2013 By Deborah Cobing 1 Comment

Windows RT is the mobile-friendly version of the desktop version of Windows 8. It was launched with great hype but sadly Windows RT tablets are not showing good results as far as sales are concerned. The reason behind it is that the market has got plenty of tablets already.

Dell_XPS10

Since the makers are unable to find much success with the Windows RT, the Dell XPS 10 tablet that is powered with Windows RT is now being sold at a reduced price of $299. When the tablet was released, it was priced at $499. The current price shows that the manufacturers have considerably reduced the price of the Dell XPS 10 tablet.

You can say that the Dell XPS 10 tablet is the cheapest tablet in the market that is powered with Windows RT. The hardware specs of the device are not bad. It has got 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU, a 10inch display screen that supports 1366 x 768 resolution, internal storage of 32GB, dedicated slot for external memory, front and rear camera and a battery that delivers battery life of up to 10 hours.

As far as the specs are concerned, the device seems to be very competitive. The major problem that has considerably reduced the sale of the device is the Windows RT OS. The Windows RT brings apps like Microsoft Office and Metro Tiles user interface. A major problem associated with Windows RT is that it does not allow you to install programs of your choice. If you want to install any software, you need to access Windows Store and check whether the software is listed there or not. If it is not listed, you won’t be able to install it.

Samsung and Acer are no longer developing devices to run on Windows RT OS. Things can be become better for Windows RT users in the near future. The recent announcement from the Microsoft camp revealed that very soon they will be releasing the Windows 8.1 update for free. The update will be able to bring significant performance enhancements to both Windows 8 and Windows RT.

Dell is trying to grab potential customers’ attention by highlighting that Dell XPS 10 tablet which is available for $299 is limited time offer. Windows RT is clearly showing signs that the OS has failed to meet Microsoft’s expectations. We hope that the Windows 8.1 update to RT can make the OS much desirable and user-friendly.
