Nobody says that instant internet access is a bad thing or that it does not bring significant advantages to a lot of fields and even to our everyday lives, but when people start to be constantly preoccupied with their internet connected devices, that may be a sing of trouble, or at least it may be time we asked ourselves some questions. And the alarming fact is that teens are almost constantly online.
The fantastic development in the field of technology, the proliferation especially of devices like the smartphone, tablets or the new so called `phablets` that are very trendy and score very high in the sales reports of big names like Samsung, HTC or Apple and the opening of the very attractive area of wearable devices, like the long awaited Apple Watch, which will hit the stores on April 24, they have all contributed to this state of fact in which we are at the moment: people, and notably teens, spend a lot of their time using their devices which allow them to surf the internet.
The Pew Research Center has recently conducted a survey which revealed a fact already present in the common consciousness. The survey showed that 92 per cent of the teens aged between 13 and 17 years old are going online on a daily basis. Furthermore, the Pew Research Center stated that 24 per cent of teens are online at every hour of the day or night. 1,060 teens have participated to this survey.
When it comes to weekly use of the Internet, only 6 per cent of the teens do so. The survey also revealed that only a small rate of 2 per cent of the teens go online less than once a week.
“Much of this frenzy of access is facilitated by mobile devices. Nearly three-quarters of teens have or have access to a smartphone and 30 percent have a basic phone.”
says the report by the Pew Research Center.
For a demographic approach of the situation, the report shows that smartphones are most popular among the African-American teens. No less than 85 per cent own such a device. On the other hand, among white or Hispanic teenagers there is a 71 per cent rate of access to a smartphone.
What do they do on the internet, given the fact that they allocate such an important amount of time to it, you may ask. Well, there is no big surprise when it comes to the teenagers` favorite activities. 71 per cent of them spend their time on Facebook, and half of the teens use Instagram and Snapchat.
