People sometimes turn into garbage what they don’t know how to handle and protect. But the lack of information is only in their own minds, because all organizations, big profitable ones or small non-profit ones, know it: the ocean gets sicker every year. At present, the amount of plastic found in the ocean is atrocious: 8.8 million tons of plastic dumped just like the grandiose water heaven would be just a trash can. The amount of plastic is considerably higher than it has been in the last recent years, and this fact just sounds like trouble.
Jenna Jamberg is the lead-author of the study and an engineering professor at the University of Georgia. She made a smart, but very sad comparison that people could easily understand: 8.8 million tons of plastic would look like five different grocery bags full of plastic objects, for every foot of coastline around the world. She predicts that if the Asian countries don’t start controlling the massively aggressive way in which they throw away plastic, by the year 2025, Planet Earth will suffer from more than 170 million tons of plastic.
The reason behind this problem is that the humanity seems to waste management disposal problems, even if there were some signs of change in the recent past. Unfortunately, they have been only this: signs. Real changes need realization and responsibilities, which are both very difficult to process for many. The grand majority of the plastic that has been found in the oceans come from five basic countries: China, Indonesia,Ski Lanka, he Phillipines and Vietnam. The United States in on rank 20 in the top 20 plastic polluters. Scientists believe that in the US, the problem is not waste management disposal problems, but littering.
2.4 million tons of plastic are the responsibility of China whereas the United States only produces 77,000 tones of it, which is less than one percent. Evidently, it is not alright, but the number is clearly smaller than China’s.
Kara Lavendar-Law is also a co-author of the study and she has made a statement in a conference of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, saying that the amount of plastic that had been found in the water is as big as the number of tuna that is being fished constantly.
“We are taking out tuna and putting in plastic.”
