STATES CHRONICLE – When you are starving and see a vending machine around, you are more likely to choose a less healthy snack since your crave is strong. Nevertheless, these new vending machines make people wait about 25 seconds for an unhealthy snack, like chips or candy bars. And if you are in a hurry, or if you are on the point to lose your bus, you will most likely choose for a healthy snack. When people see themselves in a situation where they need to wait for their treat, they may change their options, picking a healthier snack.
Vending machines are always saving those who are hungry and don’t have much time to eat
Scientists at the Rush University Medical Center developed some a vending machine which is equipped with a DISC technology (Delays to Improve Snack Choices). They are offered a 25-second time span in which they could choose another meal which is healthier and will be dispensed in an instant. Brad Appelhans, the lead investigator of the new study, claims that their purpose was to see whether they could change people snack choices.
He also stated that based on the report developed after testing the vending machine, they noticed an increase of 2-5% in the number of healthy snacks retrieved from the machine. The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health. Their main goal was to focus on five different methods to change people’s selection habits and convince them to but a healthy snack instead of waiting 25 seconds for a less healthy one.
A new technology will make people chose more healthy snack than unhealthy ones from a vending machine
Besides the 25-second delay when ordering less healthy products, researchers also tried implementing a 25% discount for the healthier snacks. Moreover, they also tried an alternative with a 25% tax on an unhealthy snack, then a 25% tax plus a 25-second delay and finally, both a 25% discount on healthier foods and a 25-second delay on unhealthy snacks. Scientists compared the results from these new vending machines to the ones which were not equipped with any of these systems.
Apparently, the time delay did not have an effect on total sales from those vending machines. In the past, previous methods, like a healthy snack vending machine, had decreased the sales and affected the profits for the office or school which collected the revenue from the machines. However, brief delays helped people chose for a healthier snack instead of an unhealthy one.
