SunBurn Relief, TRPV4 Molecule Study to Keep SunBurns Blisters at Bay?

August 7, 2013 By Janet Vasquez Leave a Comment

Washington: Each time you plan a beach holiday, the pain of sunburn haunts you, the blisters annoy you, compelling you to drop our travel plans. But in a major breakthrough, scientists have found a potentially new method to keep the sunburns at bay.

The study was conducted by the Duke University School of Medicine.

The research conducted in mouse models and human skin samples could yield a way to combat the unwelcoming sunburn and possibly several other causes of pain.

The painful, red skin that comes from spending too much time under the Sun is caused by a molecule ‘TRPV4’ which is abundant in the skin’s epidermis, a new study has found. Blocking these molecules greatly protects against the painful effects of sunburn.

sunburn

Researchers investigated whether the TRPV4 molecule, which is abundant in skin cells and has been shown to be involved in other pain processes, might play a role in the pain and tissue damage caused by over-exposure to UVB.

The scientists built a mouse model that was missing TRPV4 only in cells of the epidermis, the outermost layer of skin. They took these genetically engineered mice along with their normal counterparts and exposed their hind paws – which most resemble human skin – to UVB rays.

The hind paws of the normal mice became hypersensitive and blistered in response to the UVB exposure. But those of the mutant mice showed little sensitization and tissue injury.

To test whether these findings in mice and mouse cells have human relevance, researchers used human skin samples to successfully demonstrate increased activation of TRPV4 and endothelin. These molecules are known to cause pain in humans and also evoke itching in human epidermis after UVB exposure that causes sunburn.

New Studys Suggests Relation Between Brain Hyderactivity to Alcohol Consumption

August 4, 2013 By Sebastian Mc’Mannen Leave a Comment

A new study conducted in Canada by McGill University’s Professor Marco Leyton from the Department of Psychiatry can help in diagnosing and treating patients undergoing treatment caused by alcoholism.

According to a study published in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research there is a relation between one’s brain hyperactivity to alcoholism.

Alcoholism

It is mentioned that some alcoholics are prone to sustain more release of dopamine, a chemical which plays an important role in brains activity. Dopamine functions as a neurotransmitter i.e., it acts as a signal and gives response between the body activity and the brain. Hence an increase amount of dopamine will definitely lead to hyperactivity of some alcoholics.

It was mentioned that they studied 26 individuals 18 males and 8 females aged 18 to 30 from Montreal area. The subjects were asked to swallow three drinks within a span of 15 minutes. Alcohol tolerance test, personality traits and PET Scans of all the subjects were studied.

It was found that people who are at more risk of alcohol release large amount of dopamine which ultimately results in hyperactivity of the subjects.

Dr Leyton said, “There is accumulating evidence that there are multiple pathways to alcoholism, each associated with a distinct set of personality traits and neurobiological features. These individual differences likely influence a wide range of behaviours, both positive and problematic. Our study suggests that a tendency to experience a large dopamine response when drinking alcohol might contribute to one (or more) of these pathways.’’

Leyton also said, ‘’This effect likely contributes to why having one drink increases the probability of getting a second one – the alcohol-induced dopamine response makes the second drink look all the more desirable. If some people are experiencing unusually large dopamine responses to alcohol, this might put them at risk.’’

He concluded saying, ‘’ Although preliminary, the results are compelling. A much larger body of research has identified a role for dopamine in reward-seeking behaviours in general. For example, in both laboratory animals and people, increased dopamine transmission seems to enhance the attractiveness of reward-related stimuli.’’

August 3, 2013 By Janet Vasquez

In a recent study conducted by Canadian Doctors, researchers it was found that Botox or cosmetic surgery or facelift claims of looking 10 years younger are pathetic.

In a study conducted at University of Toronto School of Medicine by Dr. Joshua Zimm and his fellow workers it was concluded that cosmetic surgeries on an average gives 3 years younger look.

Facial cosmetic surgery

Dr Joshua Zimm Said, they have studied nearly 50 patients who underwent cosmetic surgeries to look younger and took photographs of the patients for before and after comparison. Later on the photos which were taken were presented in front of experts and researchers who were not familiar with the patient’s medical history.

The raters or subjects were asked to rate the photographs on a scale of 1 to 10 based on the attractiveness. Surprisingly, the average age of the patients who were in the photographs predicted by raters was just 3 years younger to the patient’s original age.

The study was already published in the Journal of the American Medical Association Facial Plastic Surgery. This came as a bolt for those marketers and liposuction Doctors who claim Botox or cosmetic surgeries or liposuction gives them much younger look.

The study conducted was on the patients who were between the ages of 42 to 73. So this can be considered that it is not worth for the patients who are 73 and would like to go under the knife just for the sake of looking 70 years old.
