High Amounts Of Vitamins Increase The Risks Of Cancer

April 21, 2015 By Jack M. Robinson Leave a Comment

skinVitamin-sandwich

If you expect vitamins to make you healthier and stronger, think again as science has a different opinion. High amounts of vitamins increase the risks of cancer.

Vitamins are the solution for not being affected by illness and protecting our body from different attackers, at least this is what the popular belief is. The majority of us are relying on them to improve our body functions and most of the times we tend to exaggerate with the amounts we take, not knowing that they actually might do more damage than good.

A new research has revealed that ingesting to many vitamins can increase the chances for developing heart disease and cancer.

For the moment, researchers do not know what is causing our body to react this way, but scientific evidence has shown that people who overreact with the intake of vitamins and supplements have higher chances of developing cancer, explained doctor Tim Byers from the Cancer Centre of the University of Colorado.

Twenty years ago, studies have proved that consuming more vegetables and fruits lowered their risks of cancer and tis is what made doctor Bryers to want to start a research and see if consuming high amounts of vitamins would have the same effect. During the initial studies, when they have tested vitamins intake on animals, the results of the research were encouraging.

However, when the experiment was done on humans, it didn’t present the same effect.Researchers observed thousands of individuals who were consuming some, supplements and others placebos. What they discovered was the fact that supplements turned out to be harmful for the health and some of the participants got more cancer while taking the supplements, stated researchers.

For example, the study revealed that people who didn’t respect the recommended daily dose of beta carotene, had 20% higher chances of developing lung cancer and heart problems. Folic acid, is a vitamin that is highly used by pregnant women as it helps in the good development of the pregnancy. The study conducted by doctor Byers and his team showed that high amounts of folic acid heightened with 56% the risks of cancer.

Another experiment, which took place from 2001 to 2014 on 35,000 Americans, showed that consuming exaggerated amounts of vitamin E pills increased with 17% the chances of prostate cancer .

But this doesn’t mean vitamins and supplements are prohibited. Doctor Buryers stated that people shouldn’t stay away from vitamins for this reason, as long a they respect the recommended intake, vitamins are actually beneficial for our bodies and well being.People should remember that no pill is going to replace the supplements and mineral wee get from our healthy foods.

There are some individuals who lack many vitamins in their body and pills can help them receive the nutrients they require. A representative of the Council for Responsible Nutrition stated that cancer is a disease which cannot be prevented, at least it hasn’t been discovered how, yet. Even so a healthy diet is recommended as a sure way for keeping our system healthy.

E-Cigarettes Are Preferred By Teens As They Are Cool And Taste Good

April 17, 2015 By Deborah Cobing Leave a Comment

ehp.122-A244.g0031

Teenagers are switching regular cigarettes for a trendy smoking device.  E-Cigarettes are preferred by teens as they are cool and taste good, and are becoming more and more popular among teenager living in the United States.

Reports from the Centre of Control and Prevention have shown that between 2013 and 2014 the consumption of e-cigarettes among teenagers has tripled, meaning that in 2013, 4.5% teenagers were using cigarettes and by 2014 the numbers have increased to 13.4%. In the same period, regular cigarettes have shown a serious decrease in sales, from 12.7% to 9.2%.

This statistics are raising the big question, whether e cigarettes are a threat for public health and if new regulations have to be released.

Studies have previously demonstrated that there are some flavour chemicals in the e cigarettes fluids, like chocolate, grape, cotton candy, vanilla and so on. The amount of flavour contained by the liquid was somewhere between 10 to 40 mg/mL.

What is concerning is the fact that 6 out of 24 ingredients used to give flavour to liquids belong to a group of chemicals known as aldehydes, substances that can cause respiratory irritations.

According to the CDC, half of the teens were smoking more than one type of products,( out of 4.6 million teenagers, 2.2 admitted to smoking several types of cigarettes)among which on the first position were e-cigarettes, followed by hookah and on the third place were standard cigarettes.

But the big picture has shown that teenagers are still consumers of tobacco, as the numbers of teens smoking tobacco has went up from 22.9% to 24.6%. All these statistics have alarmed the group of people who are against tobacco use, and they fear that e-cigarettes will lead to a brand new generation of nicotine addicts who at one point in their life will change the e-cigarettes for the standard ones.

Doctor Tom Frieden the head of the Centres for Control Disease and Prevention is fearing that exposing teenagers to nicotine use may develop into brain damage and lead to nicotine addiction.

Another official who showed concerns was, the head of the Food and Drug Administration, Mitch Zeller, who stated that all the progress they had made in breaking down cigarette use among teenagers might be in danger. Surveys, have reported that teenagers see e-cigarettes just as casual as their phone or their laptop.

A large amount stated that the reason why they were using e-cigarettes was to help them quit smoking standard cigarettes or weed, while others stated that they were not cigarettes smokers but they enjoyed e-cigarettes as they are cool and they taste good.

In The Future Animal Meat Might Be Replaced By Insects And Worms

April 16, 2015 By Sebastian Mc’Mannen Leave a Comment

mealwarmWould you be brave enough to eat worms? In the future animal meat might be replaced by insects and worms as the industry is rising and demands are growing.

Worms, crickets and other type of insects could might be the protein food of the future.  Entrepreneurs in the United States, are growing businesses of this type and are aiming to convince more and more people that this type of food intake is less costly, uses less land and water than any other animals raised for meat.

Information released by the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation, has shown that in 2013, there were more than 2 billion people all over the planet that had insects included in their diet.

Insects consumption has been promoted by the United Nations because it has several benefits from, being environmental friendly to starting the basis for new job for people interested in the production of insects.

Serving insect foods in the western part of the world, might encounter some difficulties as people here are used to looking at insects as something disgusting, something that if you see in your plate you refuse to eat your food anymore, explained Daniella Martin, a blogger of a site specialised in eating insects.

cri

Monica Martinez is an entrepreneur from San Francisco who is serving this kind of food and has many different recipes inspired from the Mexican traditional delicacies. Some of her famous recipes are salted crickets glazed in chocolate and spicy worms.

The whole point of this business is to invite people to taste and combine more diversified protein sources than the ones available. Their highest purpose is to transform this type of meals into something normal that is seen as something natural and people should at least try some of these foods before saying no, to them.

For starters , Martinez’s insect “restaurant” is offering free food samples for people to get the taste of it. As it was expected, there are people who have said a loud no to eating this and there were those who felt that they should at least give it a try and they have actually liked it.

In another area of San Francisco , Megan Miller is another entrepreneur who is trying to promote insects as delicious food and healthy protein sources. Her specialty cricket flour cookies, which are basically cookies containing a flour made from crickets.
They are promoting their foods as healthy snacks and a better option for parents to offer their children, as they contain less sugar than standard cookies and a double amount of proteins.

eat

The problem with insects is that they are hard to market as something appealing to the eye and our taste buds, which is the reason why people in this business are finding ways of mixing them with classical ingredients and creating attractive packages. Insects in the form of powders added to foods, are a great way for people to start getting used to the taste before they try out the entire insect, explained Miller.

Big Cricket Farms is one of the cricket suppliers from North America and its owner, Kevin Bachhuber, had the idea of opening this business after he ate crickets in Thailand.

The company started with 8,000 pounds of crickets per month but the high demand of the market is forcing him to enlarge the production to 25,000 pounds a month. Bachhuber stated that the orders are so many and large that its hard for them to keep up and he was surprised to see how fond have grown people of eating insects. He added that their goal is to incorporate insects in our regular diet.

Studies Show That Meat is Not the Enemy in the Quest for Better Health

April 13, 2015 By James Faulkner Leave a Comment

There has, for decades, been a debate between vegetarians and vegans and meat eaters over which is the healthier lifestyle. While many vegetarians avoid meat for ethical rather than nutritional reasons, there are others who are strong proponents of the argument that meat is unhealthy and that those who abstain from eating it are less likely to suffer from things like diabetes, heart disease, and various forms of cancer.

While people’s decisions about what to eat are their own, it pays to understand the facts when making decisions relating to your own health and lifestyle. Many of the arguments in support of a meat free diet have long been debunked by proper peer reviewed scientific studies, and it is these we should be looking to, rather than internet hearsay.

Meat Consumption and Obesity

Of course, some people do eat too much red meat, but then equally, some people eat too much sugar or too much fat. The increase in obesity in America has been linked to the increase in meat consumption, but this is only part of the story. While Americans do indeed eat more meat today than ever in the past, they also eat more of everything else too. This article in the New York Times references studies that have shown no correlation between obesity and whether or not someone is a vegetarian. Equally, we must take into account the simple matter of caloric density – when it comes to weight gain, all meats are not the same. Meat is mostly protein, and protein does not have as many calories per gram as fat, therefore while very fatty meat is highly caloric, lean meat is not.

Meat Consumption and Disease

Observational research on vegetarians and meat eaters has on occasion shown that the vegetarian subjects were less likely to suffer from certain health problems than meat eaters. However, as with all observational studies, cause and correlation are two different things. In fact, when researchers have looked into this more thoroughly, it appears that the reason for this is that the vegetarian group were more health aware in general – they didn’t smoke or drink as much, and exercised regularly. If they were then compared to health conscious counterparts in the meat eating groups, there was actually no difference at all.

Being a Health Conscious Meat Eater

So, if you like eating meat and have no moral or religious objections to it, it seems that giving it up will not make you healthier. However, what is important is that meat is part of a generally healthy lifestyle. High quality, lean meats of the type you can get from farmers or online farm shops like Good Grub People are a better choice, and of course, also taste much better than bland supermarket meats – and after all, the taste is the main reason to want to eat meat in the first place!

Everybody has the right to choose what they put in their bodies, but it is important to do your research and understand what is fact, and what is opinion in the great meat debate!

What Colors Are This Dress ?

February 27, 2015 By Deborah Cobing Leave a Comment

What Colors Are This Dress

Commentaries and the power of social media can take a simple idea to tour the world in a couple of hours. That’s what happened to Caitlin McNeil, a Scottish musician that has uploaded on Tumblr a photo asking her friends about the color of a dress which has a confusing color for some. The post has reached famous artists such as Taylor Swift, who entered the game in no time and has Tweeted about it on her personal profile.

The caption of the photo has been saying the following: “guys please help me — is this dress white and gold, or blue and black? Me and my friends can’t agree and we are freaking the f*** out.”

By the time BuzzFeed posted the questions to its readers, under the curious title “What Colors Are This Dress”, the number of views has risen up to 21 million. Taylor Swift hasn’t been the only one who chose to post aswell about the issue, but also other celebrities, sportspeople and millions others have joined in.

The argumentation given by McNeill, who performs in the band Canach on a small wedding that has taken place on a Scottish island called Colonsay, has been collected by the Business Insider. The musician said that one of her two closest friends were getting married and the mother of the bride took a photo of the dress in order to send it to her daughter. The fiance of the girl however, disagreed on the color and that’s where it all began.

Some of the people see it as being golden an white, while others see a dress colored in navy and black. There were some cases in which people have stated that they see the dress as being copper and grey. 75 percent of the people who has been surveyed has seen the dress gold and white, but in fact it surely is navy and black.

The explanation is scientific and it has to do with the two different cells that sense light in someone’s eyes. The retina is compromised of rods and cons. Rods see shapes, not color and are more sensitive to light, whereas cones are less sensitive to light and more to color. High school biology lessons have taught us that in darkness, we see better because of the rods and not of the cones. There are three sizes of cones that are colored in red, blue and green. As a conclusion, the differences of coloring, navy/black, white/gold has to do with the number of cones or rods that someone has and also the lighting in the room. On the other hand, the pigment called rhodopsin is used by the rod cells in order to detect color. The pigment is particularly sensitive to low light but is bleached by higher light levels and it needs some time to take it from the start, about 45 minutes. As a consequence, a dress that is found in a lighter room will be seen in one way at the beginning and then, if the person stays in a darker room for half an hour, it will see the dress in other colors when he comes back into the light.

U.S. Church Attendance Top Shows Most Religious States

February 21, 2015 By Georgia Dawson Leave a Comment

U.S. Church Attendance Top Shows Most Religious StatesA few centuries ago four New England states — Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont — were leading a religious revival. Nowadays, however, they are at the opposite end as far as U.S. church attendance is concerned, shows a late Gallup survey. As indicated by the overview, religious participation in congregations today goes from 22 percent in the Bay State down to 17 percent in the Green Mountain State. Connecticut positioned on ninth place at 25 percent. First ranked was Utah with 51% church attendance. The state has been leading the top for several years now

Frank Newport editor-in-chief at Gallup believes that the reasons behind the lack of church-goers in New England are varied. He noted:

“There is no definitive answer as to why residents in a state like Mississippi are so likely to be in church on Sundays, while residents in a state like Vermont are so unlikely,” he wrote. “Some of the differences reflect the types of people who choose to live in these states, and some reflect the types of religion that are predominant in a given state.”

Mississippi inhabitants are next in the top, alongside Alabama, Louisiana and Arkansas, with 45 percent to 47 percent saying they attend religious services in church, as per the survey.

Newport noted it is quite clear why Utah is the first on the rundown.  According to him Utah ranking at the top is the direct outcome of the state’s 59 percent Mormon residents. Mormons are known to have the highest worship service participation of all the major religious congregations in the U.S.

Last October, The Atlantic highlighted an alternate variable that is liable to keep individuals going to church, namely family ties.  The magazine wrote that throughout decades, research has found various factors to religiosity, a significant number of them obvious — like going to religious services as a kid.  Another factor is the family with studies showing that children with wedded parents that also have the same religious beliefs are likely to retain the religion they grew up with. The magazine also reported that school graduates conceived in the 1970s are more likely than non-graduates of the same age to relate to a specific religious belief.

Constant church participation might truly be a lifesaver, as the Deseret News reported a study by the Utah Department of Health, uncovering that family and religious inclusion are key elements in preventing suicide. Accordingly, young people who reported going to worship services on a weekly basis were half as likely to have considered suicide than the individuals who did not go to church regularly.

China Is Dealing With An Increase Of HIV Infections

January 17, 2015 By Janet Vasquez Leave a Comment

aids china

The country with the largest population on the face of the planet, China, is dealing with an increase of HIV infections. According to reports, the level of people infected has been getting higher and higher, the reason being, unprotected sex.

National, official statistics showed that ending of August, 2014, in China there were close to 500,000 people infected with the HIV virus or were already having the disease. An amount of 70,000 from them were new cases, which have been confirmed during the first eight months of 2014.

The homosexual community in China, was one of the population groups in which the lethal HIV virus was spreading rapidly and proved to be problematic. Many of them continue with their lives unaware of being infected, as most of them don’t even get tested, said World Health Organisation

Surprisingly the number of elderly people and young people who got infected has gone up, said Wang Guoqiang, representative director of the National Health and Family Planning.
The main cause for the spreading of the HIV virus in China, is unprotected sex, a situation that has to be urgently resolved. The transmission via infected needles or from an infected mother to a child have been put under control and are kept at a low level.

China has made a huge progress in decreasing the virus transmission rates from infected mothers to their babies and has managed to keep under control the transmission via infected needles, as drug users of this type have access to specialised clinic all around China.

In China, there is a lot of shame hidden behind a sick or infected person.Society considers them black sheep and teat them like outcasts. Records reported that a month ago a boy of only eight years old infected with HIV, from a western China provence, has been thrown out from its village by locals. They thought of him as a danger, and it was just a matter of time before he would harm others. The little boy, was abandoned by his parents and was under caregiver surveillance. His own grandfather, toter with the care giver agreed to sign the petition of the 200 people who wanted him out of the village.

Health experts believe that the fear of being stigmatised and discriminated against by society is what determines people living in silence with the virus and stops them from going to the doctor and getting a HIV test and treatment.

This year, Beijing officials will be working on introducing new ways for HIV testing at medical centers which perform blood transfusions. The decision of improving the quality of services, has been made after a child was infected with the virus due to a blood transfusion at one of the hospitals in the city.

The Environment Is The Designer Of Our Immune System

January 17, 2015 By Jack M. Robinson Leave a Comment

immune

The sensitivity of our body to germs might be related to the environment we live in. Our immunes system is changing with the passing of time, by  moulding on the way and place we live our lives. The environment is the designer of our immune system, study shows.

Ever wondered why some people always get the flu and others hardly or never do? What is it that make sour bodies react so different to viruses, diseases, microbes, or even slight changes of temperatures?

Nothing is more complex than our immune system, a born “killer” who is trained to protect us at any cost against any kind of invader. We are all created the same, but the differences are in the details and cells of our immune system. What causes this diversity in every single human it is still unknown. Our immune system is very flexible and ca adapt and adjust its settings according to the environment. For example, microbes seam to play a main role in diversifying the immune system of each person.

In order to find more about what makes our immune system so unique, immunologist, of the University of Stanford University from Palo Alto, California, Mark Davis, and his research team, conducted an experiment on twins.
There are more types of twins, identical twins have very similar genetics, while fraternal twins have around half of their genes the same. Fraternal twins are less likely to share hereditary traits than identical twins are.

Researchers studied 210 twins, both identical and fraternal, with the ages varying from 8 to 82 years old. They got blood samples from each person and did some specific calculations on their immune system. Scientists calculated the amount of the 95 types of immune cells and 51 types of proteins. Results showed that the immune system of identical twins was totally different. Which means that environmental conditions can transform genetic similarities. Younger twins had more similarities than older twins had, clear evidence that with the passing of time and exposure to different environmental conditions, could be changing the immune system.
Genetic impact can be seen also in the way the body responds to vaccines. Some bodies has stronger reactions to vaccines, and release more antibodies.Again, another environmental related difference appeared, possibly because of the different viruses the twins had been exposed over time.

This is not a revolutionary discovery but just proves, again, that our body is a real masterpiece which never ceases to amaze us.

Wendy’s Said No More Sodas In The Children Menus

January 17, 2015 By Georgia Dawson Leave a Comment

wendys_kids_meal

A new fast food chain switched battle fronts and is now fighting against menus offering sugar bombs sodas to children. Wendy’s said no more sodas in the children menus, and accepted to contribute to helping kids be healthier.

The company’s decision has been already put in practice after was first revealed by a press release from a nutrition organisation. Public nutrition and health organisations such as MomsRising.org or the Interfaith Centre, have been long time pressing Wendy’s to make this change and start to take responsibility for the kids. What we serve our body can be our best friend or our most feared enemy.
McDonalds was among the ones who said YES! from the beginning to eliminating soda drinks from the children Happy Meals. The decision had been made in 2013 and its is now on full functioning duty. Out of three burger chains giants, Burger King has remained the only one who is still including soda drinks in menus created for children.
Wendy’s will be no longer promoting soda options on the restaurant’s kids menus and will also be removing them completely from drive throughs and from the app created for the U.S. and Canadian public.

However, the restaurant’s spokesman, Bob Bertini, said that unlike other fast food chain restaurants, Wendy has never set fixed kids menus that offered only soda beverages. Their policy would allow customers who were ordering a kids meal to include whatever drink they wanted in their menus.
Wendy’s decision comes as a marketing tool, meant to promote a healthier diet for children and come to the rescue of parents by helping them make better food choices when it comes to their children, said Jessica Almy, of the Center for Science in the Public Interest.
Parents are the ones responsible for what goes on their children’s plate and fast food chains restaurants should allow them to make better choices.

The next step would be convincing other fast food chains like Burger King ,IHOP and Applebee’s to contribute to this health campaign.
So far, these have been small, but promising changes made by fast food producers. But actions like this should be followed by broader nutritional improvements on the meals offered to kids and adults to eat. Their menus should cut off the sodium levels in the foods and design new ones that would  provide more vegetables, fruits and whole grains. If people would have more options, their diet habits could evolve, even when eating at a fast food restaurant.

Church Refused To Show Images Of A Gay Woman Kissing Her Life Partner

January 14, 2015 By Janet Vasquez Leave a Comment

church14n-2-webChurch refused to show images of a gay woman kissing her life partner at her own funeral. During a memorial service held for a recently deceased woman, the ceremony church officials prohibited the family to show pictures of the lesbian deceased woman, kissing her same sex partner.

The funeral taking place at New Hope Ministries in Lakewood, was immediately canceled and moved to a funeral home, after the Denver area church officials had no intention of allowing the family to show images of the deceased gay woman and her partner kissing, during the ceremony. Minister Gary Rolando, a minister who had been contacted by the deceased woman’s family to officiate the funeral service, said that the relatives of Vanessa Collier didn’t want to remove the images from the memorial video, which portrayed the gay couple kissing.

The churches demand put an end to the ceremony. The family and funeral attendants were asked to leave the church. A number of around 200 people were forced to leave as the ceremony wouldn’t take place anymore. Jose Silva, a friend of Vanessa Collier said that the churches demand was demeaning for Vanessa’s family and her memory, as they were asked to edit the videos that represented her life.

The casket of the deceased woman was moved to a close by funeral home where the memorial took place together with the entire video and images. The happening enraged the friends and family of Vanessa Collier, and they started a protest in front of the New Hope Ministries church, on Tuesday with banners saying that people will not find hope at this church  but hypocrisy.

The church refunded the family the $400 they had paid for the service, on Monday. All the comments concerning the matter where referred to minister Gary Rolando.

He explained that the church has a liberal policy and accepts people with different sexual orientations, but images or videos of same sex couples kissing, or hugging cannot be shown. He remained in neutral, as he agreed with both parts and said that he understood Vanessa’s family point of view.

New Hope Ministries was founded in 1981 and on its website it is written a presentation of its beliefs saying that that is a place where those suffering from drugs, alcohol, violence and gangs could find hope.
