President Obama announces executive action on immigration reform

June 30, 2014 By Janet Vasquez Leave a Comment

After waiting for one year, Obama takes executive action on immigration reform

Obama held at the White House a very sharp discourse aimed at the House Republicans. More than 40.000 children from Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras tried to cross the border illegally this year alone. Obama stated on Monday that it is the time for him to take executive action on immigration reform, after he waited one year for the House Republicans to pass comprehensive immigration legislation.

“The failure of House Republicans to pass a darn bill is bad for our security, is bad for our economy, is bad for our future. America cannot wait forever for them to act.” Obama declared.

How Obama will take executive action on immigration reform

Obama asked for a list of recommended actions that he can take unilaterally until the end of the summer from both DHS secretary Jeh Johnson and Attorney general Eric Holder. To end the humanitarian crisis, Obama asked for $2 billion in order to address issues such as hosting facilities for the migrant children. Many federal departments are currently insufficiently addressing the problem. Even so, the Department of Health and Human Services is searching for available places all over the country to host the children.

Both parties showed support for the bill in the Senate last year already and Obama declared he has waited enough. “There are enough Republicans and Democrats in the House to pass an immigration bill today, I would sign it into law today, and Washington would solve a problem in a bipartisan way,” Obama declared, “But for more than a year, Republicans in the House of Representatives have refused to allow an up-or-down vote on that Senate bill or any legislation to fix our broken immigration system.”

Boehner stated shortly after Obama’s speech that “In our conversation last week, I told the president what I have been telling him for months now: The American people and their elected officials don’t trust him to enforce the law as written”. The Republicans are concerned that the message a more laissez-faire immigration approach might encourage the illegal migration process.

The topic of migration is not the first battlefield between Boehner and Obama. They have fought over the issues of health care, gun control and government spending and rarely achieved compromise. It is an important background of why Obama decided to take executive action on immigration reform. Support for immigration reform has been wide, ranging from religious organizations and business groups and even almost 60 percent of the Americans, according to a poll ordered by ABC / Washington Post.

Ukraine signs free trade agreement with the EU

June 27, 2014 By James Faulkner Leave a Comment

Ukraine signs a free trade agreement with EU

After the recent EU parliamentary elections and the intense conflict between Ukraine and the Russian Federation, an important step has been taken. The EU on the one side and Ukraine, along with Moldova and Georgia, on the other, signed an economic agreement. Troubled Ukraine signs a free trade agreement, so let us have a look at the consequences.

Central and Eastern Europe has changed from the homogeneous area we are used to be familiar with to a more complex terrain. In 2004 a handful of Central European states joined the EU, followed soon by Romania and Bulgaria in 2007. The EU halted its admission process afterwards in an attempt to reassess the state of the affairs in the midst of the economic crisis. Right now, Ukraine, one of the remaining buffer states between the two large powers, the EU and the Russian Federation, decided to take the path towards the first by signing the free trade agreement.

Political remarks on the free trade agreement

“Signing these Association Agreements with Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Areas should not be seen as the end of the road, but as the beginning of a journey on which the European Union and these three partner countries are embarking together today,”, Barroso, the President of the EU Comission, stated.

The Ukrainian President, Petro Poroshenko, signed the agreement after more than a half a year delay. The previous president, Yanukovych, decided to ignore the accord in November and instead turn its face towards the Russian Federation.

“Ukraine should embark on the path of peace, dialogue and accord. The priority is to conduct substantial talks between the authorities in Kiev and the southeast” Putin states in a rather hypocritical manner, as long as the Russian troops stormed in Ukrainian territory without a thorough prior dialogue.

“It is their sovereign right, but the Russian Federation will have to take measures in case it negatively effects the local market,” Dmitry Peskov, Putin’s spokesperson said.

Poroshenko calls for peace, although signals in his discourse that he does not give up Crimea yet.  It is hardly a substantial indicator of real peace to follow soon, as last week there have been deadly clashes reported between Ukrainian forces and the Eastern separatists.

Although widely regarded as a success, it remains to be seen how the accord’s consequences will translate in an overall improvement of the Ukrainian people’s wellbeing. The country currently struggles with severe economic instability and GDP reduction, as well as a huge shadow economy accounting for around 50 percent of the GDP. The EU, on the other hand, has a straight-forward policy of enlarging the community free market under its own pre-established regulations. We will probably not see milk and honey flowing to Ukrainians too soon, as the national adoption of regulations and the subsequent economic revamping will surely last for a couple of years. The free trade agreement will open wide Ukraine’s gates for large European companies. Oil extraction companies will surely have a say in the future Ukrainian economic life, as the land promises to have rich resources of shale gas.

Apple iOS 7.1 Update to be Released Soon, Will Include Critical Bug Fixes

November 23, 2013 By Jack M. Robinson Leave a Comment

In all likelihood, the iOS 7 update in the form of iOS 7.1 that has been spoken about at length is going to see light of the day sooner. Fresh speculations indicate the release of this update to be around the end of the month. This speculation is based on the fact that a beta version of the update has been released for developers this week.

ios-7

A major bug that can be noted to have been fixed in this update in its beta form has been the end of TCP FIN of the device being sent to the Bluetooth server when user typed an incorrect HTTP address. This was caused when 32 bit apps that worked on 64 bit devices like the iPhone 5s.

There was another bug experienced when using the CTFrameDraw app. Line used to be placed without any consideration of paragraph and spacing in the NSParagrpah Style when drawing text on the screen. The new update would fix that problem. Sleeping when idle for up to 1 millisecond has also been corrected to not being so precisely time sensitive.

Users would also get “No Missed Notification” or “No Notifications” message in the Notification Centre as reported by 9to5Mac. Users would also have the option not to upload all the photos taken in burst mode to the Photo Stream. New Yahoo! Logo and Flickr icon would also be visible on the screen at all times post update.

Loading of iTunes Match from the library previously required the entire environment to be loaded which took considerable time. That has now been corrected to allow user select which portion to load alone. Loading after the update is much smoother and quicker owing to the implementation of the “MCSessioninitWithPeer” concept.

US withdraws staff from Lahore consulate over terror threat, issues travel advisory to Pakistan

August 9, 2013 By Janet Vasquez Leave a Comment

Washington: The US State Department on Friday evacuated all non-emergency staff from its consulate in the Pakistani city of Lahore, citing specific terrorist threat against the facility.

The consulate in Lahore was scheduled to be closed for the Eid holiday from Thursday to Sunday and no reopening had been scheduled, one ofus embassy the State Department officials has reportedly said.

The US has also issued a travel advisory to all its citizens asking to defer unnecessary travel to Pakistan amid a worldwide alert over Al-Qaeda intercepts. US citizens who are in Lahore despite the travel warning were asked to limit non-essential travel within the country. A senior State Department official has reportedly said that the US citizens in Pakistan should enroll their presence in Pakistan through the Smart Traveller Enrolment Program (STEP) in a bid to avoid any untoward incident.

“The presence of several foreign and indigenous terrorist groups poses a potential danger to US citizens throughout Pakistan,” the official statement read.

“Thought the Government of Pakistan maintains heightened security measures, threat reports indicate that terrorist groups continue to seek opportunities to attack locations where US citizens and Westerners are known to congregate or visit,” the statement read.

Earlier this week, 19 US embassies in 16 countries in the Middle East and Africa were closed to the public through Saturday and nonessential personnel were evacuated from the US Embassy in Yemen.
Most of al-Qaeda’s core leadership is believed to reside in Pakistan and the city of Lahore is home to other extremists sympathetic to the group. Lahore is well-known as a base for Lashkar-e-Taiba, which is considered a terrorist organization by the United States.

Snowden effect: Obama cancels meeting with Putin, Russia disappointed

August 8, 2013 By Janet Vasquez Leave a Comment

Washington: US President Barack Obama on Wednesday canceled a Russian summit with President Vladimir Putin scheduled for next month in retaliation for Moscow’s decision to grant asylum to intelligence leaker Edward Snowden.

The move is seen as a great setback in US-Russia relations especially at a time when both the countries are struggling hard to mend their ties.

In a statement released by the White House, spokesman Jay Carney said, “Following a review in July, we have reached at a conclusion that there is not enough progress in our bilateral policies with Russia. So, a US-Russia summit in early September is uncalled for.”

Meanwhile, the Russian government expressed disappointment over the US decision. Putin’s foreign policy aide, Yuri Ushakov, said, “It is very clear that the decision is taken due to the Snowden issue which we did not create.”obama -putin
He further stressed that Russia’s invitation for Obama to visit Moscow still stood.

US-Russia relations

The tense time looming on the US-Russia relations is not new but has prevailed even before the Edward Snowden affair. Here’s a brief account of ups and downs witnessed in US-Russia ties.

• In April 2010, President Barack Obama and then Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed the landmark disarmament treaty. The United States and Russia sealed a deal on the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) in March 2010, agreeing to cut their deployed nuclear arsenals by 30% while reducing the number of missiles, bombers and submarines on atomic patrol.

• In July 2010, US and Russia agreed to exchange 10 Russian spies who were arrested in the US on June 27 for four prisoners being held in Russia. This was one of the biggest prisoner swaps between both the countries since the Cold War.

• In February 2012, Hillary Clinton charged Russia and China with having “blood” on their hands for blocking a UN resolution seeking to impose sanctions on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

• This year in March, Russia had extended support to US-led effort at the UN to impose fresh financial penalties on North Korea following its third nuclear weapons test.

• In August 2013, President Obama canceled plans to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin after Moscow decided to grant asylum to the fugitive NSA leaker, Edward Snowden.

Despite Snowden row, US to go ahead with high-level Russia talks

August 7, 2013 By Janet Vasquez Leave a Comment

Washington: Despite Russia’s decision to grant asylum to former US spy agency contractor Edward Snowden, the United States has decided to hold talks with Moscow’s defense and foreign ministers in Washington on Friday.

The State Department said that the talks would go ahead and the Snowden’s case would be among the key issues raised when Secretary of State John Kerry and Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel will meet their Russian counterparts.

“We have raised the Snowden issue with Russian officials many times in recent weeks. We expect to do so again,” State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said.

United States appears to be trying hard to avoid derailing ties with its Cold War rival by proceeding with some high-level talks with it while still leaving Obama’s participation in the summit in doubt.

snowden

The experts believe that the two sides would not worsen relations below a certain level as US needs Russia more than Russia needs US. The experts have made the observation in the light of issues such as nuclear non-proliferation in Iran, the Syrian crisis settlement and others.

Snowden had spent more than five weeks in a Moscow airport while trying to find a country for asylum. US wanted Russia to return him so that he could face charges for leaking National Security Agency surveillance secrets to the media. But Moscow’s rejection has prompted President Barack Obama to rethink whether to hold a summit in Moscow with Russian President Vladimir Putin next month.
