Ever since we are born, we have been told that milk and dairy products are good for our health and if we want to be strong and healthy we have to consume it on a daily basis.But could this belief be wrong?
A study conducted by Spanish researchers from the Autonomous University of Madrid, has observed 4,445 people and the connection between the daily intake of yoghurt and health condition. The results showed that there were no benefits when it comes to the mental and physical health, stated lead author of the research, Esther Lopez-Garcia.
The individuals from the experiment who ate yogurt regularly didn’t show any sign of improvement in their physical condition, compared to those who did not eat yogurt. The only difference was a small mental improvement, but given how small the difference was it couldn’t be taken into consideration, explained Lopez-Garcia.
Many experts have stated for a long time that including yogurt in our regular diet can improve our health, but these statements haven’t been tested or proven. Further and more detailed studies have to be conducted in order to determine whether exists indeed a benefit of yogurt for our health, added Lopez-Garcia.
In Spain, just like in many other countries of the world, dairy products ar promoted as healthy foods which have to be consumed regularly.
Researchers of the study believe that the explanation for this would be the fact that the majority of the researches have focused on the effect of all of these different products as a whole and admitted that each product should be evaluated trough studies that would indicate the impact they have on health.
The Spanish research was published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
Previous studies have claimed that the intake of yogurt has a direct or indirect influence on the health related quality of life as it contains high amounts of calcium which protects the bones against diseases like osteomuscular, one of the biggest health issues that impacts negatively the quality of life. On the other hand, yogurt seems to keep the weight and blood pressure under control helps lowering the risks of heart diseases, according to various researches.
Presently the laws in Europe state that the claimed health properties of foods must be proven trough scientific studies. This new research has brought new data that would add to the evaluation of the dairy products.
In the United States, the US Department for Agriculture also analyses the food qualities proposed by the industry and according to the results, they allow or reject the product to be released on the market.
