STATES CHRONICLE – Researchers in quantum physics medical applications from the University in Sidney have made a breathtaking discovery. Diamonds may hold the key in curing cancer. The study, which was published this Friday in Nature Communication shows that a diamond has the ability to light-up early cancerous formations, too small to be detected through traditional imaging methods.
Scientist have discover that synthetic nano diamonds are very effective at detecting early-stage cancerous tumors when used together with an MRI scanner.
In an early report, researchers said that if they were to attach such nano diamonds to the active compound of chemotherapy drug, they could significantly increase both yield and efficiency. Moreover, scientist agree that using nano diamonds along with chemo will prove much more benefic to the body because of their size and non-toxicity property.
Upon entering the blood stream, these micro gems will not be subjected to an immune response coming from the body. David Reilly, one of the researchers involved in this daring project said that diamonds have been selected for these experiments in drug delivering methods because they are not toxic to the body and they don’t react with anything inside the blood stream.
But before these little trinkets are able to seek out cancerous tumors, they have to undergo a very delicate and intricate process that imbues them with special properties. With the help of state-of-the-art equipment, scientists must align a series of atoms inside so that they can create a unique signature that can be detected by any MRI.
As not to misconstrue the true purpose of the synthetic micro diamonds, researchers stated that these crystalline marvels don’t do the actual fighting, but are in fact a kind of markers, tools that we can use to track actual cancer-fighting molecules. Remember all those war movies where soldiers painted targets in order to follow them more easily?
The same principle applies to these diamonds, as well. When entering the blood stream, a hyperpolarized nano diamond has the ability to attach itself to cancer-fighting molecule and track its progress throughout the body. Basically, as the researchers stated, the nano diamonds provide an accurate map of a cancer cells travelling in the body.
Reilly is highly pleased with the preliminary results and says that this is a fine example of how a hyper theoretical discipline like quantum physics can provide answers for our daily issues.
This is a monumental leap ahead for medical science, being able to identify and target all forms of cancers long before they can put our lives in jeopardy.
