Millennial women are delaying to have children due to economical reasons. Women nowadays belong to the slowest generation of having kids in the entire history of the United States. The main reason for this phenomenon is not just because career has become an important part in the modern lives but because of the economical status.
According to statistics, birth rates in America have declined with 15 %(among women between 20 and 29 years old) before and after the financial crisis, more precisely between 2007 and 2012.
The uncertain financial situation made women whose biological clock is not ticking to realize that the situation was tough and postponed having children as they have time later on in life, explained the co author of the research Nan Astone from the Urban Institute.
Unemployment and loans are directly related to the delaying of having children and most of them young women didn’t rule out the possibility of maybe not having children at all.
The economical crisis seems to have had an impact on all races when it comes to the giving birth rate.
The most affected by the situation have proved to be the Hispanics whom between 2007 and 2012 showed a birth decline of 27%. African-American women showed a birth decline of 14% during the same years and birth rate in Caucasian women had declined with 11%.
The economical crisis was felt hard by young adults who had difficulty in finding a job even after graduating college and the majority of them chose to live with their parents because rents became higher.
On the other hand marriage has declined as well. Americans between 25 and 34 years old who have never been married stated that for them marriage hasn’t been an option as they were not financially stable, according to survey reports. Many believe that a baby and a marriage come hand in hand.
Researchers can’t tell for the moment if millennial women (born between 1980 and 2000) will have more children in their thirties or will just have less children than the earlier generations.
However the research did note that there has been an increase of family unbalance as there are more single parents belonging to disadvantaged social groups while adults with better living conditions delayed having kids and getting married.
