STATES CHRONICLE- Obesity is a common problem these days. More and more people are overweight or obese due to the fact that they tend to exercise less and eat less healthy. The bigger problem is that obesity is linked to other conditions that might affect us. Some of those conditions are diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol.
In order to overcome obesity, many people decide to have gastric bypass surgery. Although many people believe that it is dangerous and ineffective, two studies showed that for teenagers this might be a safe and effective choice.
Until now it was believed that the gastric bypass surgery is a short-term solution, but these studies showed that it can benefit people in the long-term. In order to conduct these studies, researchers followed up the patients for more than 5 years. They wanted to see how the surgery evolves over time and if the patients are feeling better.
The results showed that the corporal mass of the people who took this type of surgery was reduced and it was maintained over time. Also, it was shown that the rates of high cholesterol, hypertension, and diabetes were reduced too.
Despite the fact that these results were achieved, the patients had low levels of B12 and vitamin D. Some of them were even diagnosed with anemia. The researchers mentioned that these problems are not caused by the surgery itself but by the way people eat after the surgery.
Other studies showed that this surgery is becoming less dangerous because the complication and mortality rates are reduced. This type of surgery is becoming more common and that is why researchers focused on this topic. Although it is recommended only for people who are severely obese, many people who are overweighed tend to choose this operation too.
The researchers mentioned that their findings only apply to teenagers because they only tested them. They said that they need to make more studies to find out if the surgery is effective and safe for adults and older people.
The only problem that the researchers found is the fact that after the surgery the body tends to absorb fewer vitamins than it should have. They said that this can be changed if people who took gastric bypass surgery have a diet that contains a lot of vitamins.
What is your opinion about this study? Do you know anyone who took gastric bypass surgery?
