Because of privacy concerns, Google will not be able allowing face recognition feature on Google Glass. Google has resorted to such a step after they received lots of complaints concerning the possibilities of face recognition feature on Google Glass.
From the time it was announced that Google Glass (the wearable spectacles from Google) would feature a camera. Many analysts started complaining that users can misuse the camera to snap photos and record videos of the people they meet and interact. The camera can scan people’s face to fetch personal information from the internet.
In fact, in the previous month US Congress had written to the CEO of Google, Larry Page to provide them with information on privacy protections for the wearable device. Since Google does not plan to offer facial recognition on Google Glass unless it confirms on privacy protection, Google won’t be approving any apps facial recognition apps.
The Google Glass comes with a screen placed above the right eye. It functions as a camera and microphone. Facial recognition is one of the features of Google Glass. However, with so many complaints pouring in about facial recognition, Google has decided to not to offer that feature currently. However, they may make feature available in the future.
Since Google Glass is able to understand some voice commands, the microphone remains on throughout the time you use it. This means through the time it remains on and keeps on listening what’s going on around. Some feel that it can be secretly to record audio. With many privacy related issues with the Google Glass, Google is really paying good attention to the criticism it is receiving for the wearable gadget.
Some experts feel that facial recognition will never be available on Google Glass. Google won’t be making any Google Glass facial recognition apps available on the Google Play Store. But the question is how it is going to stop third-party app makers from distributing facial recognition apps. We feel that even though Google will continue to impose official ban on facial recognition, users can try to avail such an app from third-parties.
