An information was made public on one of the sites affiliated to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant regarding the recent attack of a national museum in Tunisia`s capital, Tunis. The statement claimed responsibility of the Islamic State over the terrorist attack that killed at least 23 people and wounded numerous others, within which there were mostly foreign tourists.
The Tunisian authorities have not yet confirmed that the Islamic State group was the author of the attack but they say two gunmen, who were killed in an armed conflict with the police, have been identified. Also, it seems that 9 other suspects have been taken into custody by the police and they are thought to be connected to the tragic event of Wednesday`s afternoon.
The attack took place at the National Bardo Museum, which is among the most important museums in the Mediterranean Basin and is regarded as the second most important gallery after the Egyptian Museum of Cairo. The event gives a blow to Tunisian tourism, one of the most significant sectors in the country`s economy, and a creator of numerous jobs. Tunisia is the closest to being an operative democratic system amogst the states of Maghreb, or the northern part of the African continent. After the attack, two of the cruise lines that cross the Mediterranean Sea cancelled their following stops in Tunisia. The two ships are Italy`s Costa Crociere and MSC Cruises. 17 of their customers were murdered during the attack in Tunis.
Tunisia`s Health Minister, Said Aidi, revealed a report on the vicitms` identity. It showed that out of the total victims of the attack claimed by the Islamic State, 20 were foreigners visiting Tunisia. Three of the victims were Tunisians. The foreigners were on vacation from their home-countries, Columbia, Japan, Australia, Spain, Poland, the United Kingdom, Belgium and France. The attack wounded approximately 50 people, and some of them are critically injured.
A Spanish couple hid into the museum basement, where they spent the night, and were discovered the next day by the authorities. The Spanish woman was pregnant. Also, the officials found an employee of the National Bardo Museum who had hidden in one of the store rooms. Fortunately, they all have escaped without any physical injury.
Still, there was a couple from Barcelona that was killed by what now seems to be Islamic State extremists. They were on holiday, celebrating 50 years since their wedding.
