STATES CHRONICLE-Women have a lot of options when it comes to contraception. They can choose from a variety of pills, implants, and diaphragm. While women have so many to choose from, men only have two options. One that is short-term (condoms) and another that is permanent and invasive (vasectomy).
This is why researchers have been trying to figure out how to make another option for men. Researchers developed a male birth control gel that can be the answer for men. This male birth control gel was tested on monkeys and the results were great.
The named of this male birth control gel is Vasagel. The researchers tested it on monkeys and they observed that it was effective for them during the mating seasons. In order for this gel to work it needs to be injected in the vas deferens. This way the gel blocks the sperm from escaping. This male birth control gel is reversible and long lasting.
Despite the fact that the study was very small and that it was performed on monkeys, the results were interesting. 16 male monkeys were given this birth control gel and then they were returned to their housing.
All of these monkeys were followed for at least one year after the gel was injected. The findings showed that none of these male monkeys were able to conceive during this study. The author of the study, Angela Colagross-Schouten mentioned that they were impressed with the results.
The researchers mentioned that they were not expecting to have such great results when they first administrated the male birth control gel. They were expecting to have at least one monkey that did not respond well to the treatment.
This study was funded by the developer of the gel, Parsemus Foundation. The researchers mentioned that during the study they experienced only a few complications. Despite the fact that they experience these minor complications, the researchers mentioned that the rate of complication that is experienced by monkeys when they undergo a vasectomy is bigger than the rate of these complications.
All in all the findings of the study showed that this male birth control gel is very effective for monkeys. Although it effective for them, the researchers need to make more tests before they can be sure that it is both effective and safe for people too.
