New Harvard Study Shows E-Cigs Are Also Addictive and can lead to serious health problems.
It is a common misconception that smoking addiction is given solely by the the nicotine present in cigarettes. Yet, less people know that the real danger of dependency lies not in nicotine alone but in the additives found in cigarettes.
One such additive is called Pyrazines, and it is found in “light” cigarettes and electronic ones alike. The new study took a closer look at some of the most popular brands, such as Marlboro Lights (Gold) but also at the chemicals in e-cigs.
The additive is believed by researchers to be increasing an addictive quality in the nicotine. A staggering number of additives, almost 600, are approved for use in cigarettes. They give the flavor and aroma in in tobacco smoke, contributing to popcorn and cocoa type flavors.
The study discovered that e-cigarettes also contain the addictive additives, although, truth be told, less of them, and also other flavorings which are used to make the taste of the vapor more pleasant.
Normally, flavorings are safe for the body to ingest when they are in their natural state, yet when burned or inhaled they become poisonous. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has therefore made efforts to warn the public against vaping, which is legal for the adult population.
The process of dependance results from the release of dopamine, a neurochemical, in the brain. Dopamine is known to increase arousal, pleasure and mood change. The additive stimulates the receptors in the lining of the nose thus leading to an enhanced learned behavior.
The tobacco companies will not eliminate pyrazines from their secret recipe because they increase the appeal of their products and make it more difficult for customers to quit smoking, thus ensuring their future financial stability.
E-cigs may seem to affect people’s health less than regular tobacco, yet the findings of the research prove otherwise. The use of pyrazines in cigarettes and e-cigarettes should be regulated by governmental health agencies, and the public should be kept informed of the dangers that lie cigarettes.
In Wales, the authorities have already taken measures by proposing on Tuesday a new law regarding the public health. The law would ban smoking e-cigs in public areas, such as restaurants or offices.
Meanwhile, consumers continue to vape, believing their new e-cigarettes are less risky and less addictive than regular cigarettes.
Until the matter is enforced, smokers continue to vape, putting both their and others’ health in danger, believing that e-cigs are less addictive and risky than regular tobacco.
