October 21st, as everybody knows, is the day Marty McFly came to when he traveled through time, so Nintendo spoils us with ‘Wild Gunman’ on ‘Back to the Future’ Day.
Marty McFly is the cool kid. He’s the one who traveled through time, aided by his nutty, but brilliant scientist friend, in a wicked DeLorean, to save his entire family. And he did it. The movie is one of the best known and loved movies of all time, numerous of its elements making it into pop culture forever, as well as in our hearts and minds.
In “Back to the Future” 2, Marty travels through time again, to save his children, to this exact same day, October 21st, 2015. He, of course, finds a world like he has never seen before, where people wear sneakers with laces that time themselves up, skateboards that hover and cars that can actually fly. Well, Marty would’ve been a bit disappointed by the truth. The only flying car we have belongs to Ron Weasley, our hovering skateboard project is still on Kickstarter and we don’t have any self-tying shoe laces. We do have a self-stirring mug, though, as far as laziness goes.
Therefore, the good people at Nintendo thought that, if we can’t give Marty something he hoped to actually see in 2015, maybe he could give us something we wished we could see, from the glorious 80s. So they decided to release the arcade game ‘Wild Gunman’ that appeared in a scene in the 1989 movie.
The game was originally released on October 18th, 1985, therefore, it celebrated its 30th anniversary this month on the 18th, not the 21st. But, since it was Marty McFly’s favorite game, the Nintendo people wanted to commemorate him and pay tribute to the movie, by releasing the game the same day Marty came to in the future.
And they also thought of us and our childhood nostalgias. So, since yesterday, game lovers can download ‘Wild Gunman’ from the Nintendo eShop or from the Wii Shop Channel. The game works perfectly on Wii, whose remote you can use to shoot the targets on the screen, instead of the old-fashioned light gun controller.
One bad piece of news does cloud this trip down memory lane. The game will only be released in Europe in the beginning. However, Americans, do not despair. It may yet come to the New World as well. Let’s keep our fingers crossed and hope we get to play this aging beauty one last time.
