In the future, we could eat our food packaging too

STATES CHRONICLE – Imagine that someday you will not only eat your favorite chocolate but its packaging too. You would say that it isn’t healthy for us. At this moment, it is not. However, in the future, things will change. Researchers from the U.S. Department of Agriculture are working on a friendly food packaging made from milk protein.

The scientists said that this material could replace the plastic that is now used. We will go to the supermarket and all our favorite foods will be covered in milk protein. Moreover, this protein is better for the environment and for us too. It is biodegradable, keeps food fresher than the material we are using now and we will be able to eat it. This new packaging will be also an advantage for our planet.

It could be used in many situations. You will be able to eat a pack of ramen noodle just by letting it in boiled water. The packaging could contain flavors and vitamins, too. The products that would use them need to be shipped and sold in containers made of plastic.

Why is plastic dangerous for our environment? First of all, it is not biodegradable. When we break down a product made of plastic, it releases substances that can contaminate soil and water. Of course, some could say that we should recycle. The truth is that producing materials which are recycled makes us use a big amount of energy. If we want to reduce the plastic, we should think of other solution. It seems like these researchers have found it.

Moreover, plastic is a danger for our oceans and seas. There are thousands of pieces of plastic that float in those waters. Birds, dolphins, and fish died due to the plastic items that are left in our waters. Animals are eating it and this can be dangerous for them.  This material contains so many substances that can be a threat to humans. There are people who work with plastic every day and when it melts, our health is in danger.

We are hoping that this new packaging will be on the market soon. It will be safer to use and we could also help the environment. Of course, there are industries where plastic has to be used. However, our food would be safer if we will use these packaging made of milk protein.
