STATES CHRONICLE – Parents should pay more attention when it comes to their children’s health. According to a study, made by the UCLA Health, most parents follow outdated advice when the treat a child with a concussion. This could make them feel worse.
Dr. Christopher Giza, neurologist, and director of the UCLA Steve Tisch BrainSPORT Program said that, in the past, concussion were not seen as such dangerous things. At the moment, parents went too far the other director and, despite their best intentions, they could complicate their child’s recovery. Researchers used data from 569 parents across the country. They were asked how they treat a child, who has concussion symptoms for more than a week. Most of them said they would wake the child up during the night to see how he/she is feeling.
Parents should take their child to a doctor in the moment after injury. If they will wake him up during the night for more than a week, they will make the child’s symptoms worse. A doctor is able to evaluate how the patient is feeling, his memory and energy level. If your kid is tired, a good diagnose will be impossible. When a doctor says there is no future risk, you should let you child sleep because his brain will heal faster.
There were parents who did not let their children have activity after they had a concussion. However, they should pay attention because their kid could become overweight and spend too much time in front of the computer. Doctors advise that even though children should not play sports after the injury, they could do other activities. For example, they could walk the dog or have a walk in the mountains. Your child will feel better and you will see he will recover faster.
Moreover, some parents think that taking their child’s gadgets, such as cell phones or computers, will help him after a concussion. Children feel better when they socialize. If you do not let them use their phones, they could develop other problems, such as depression, and they will feel worse.
Parents should protect their children from activity during the first days after the injury. After that, they should start involving them in activities. If they are feeling worse, take your child to see a doctor. Follow his advice because a concussion can be dangerous, no matter what age we have.
