People suffering from mental illnesses do not chose to be ill.

STATES CHRONICLE – Authorities want to determine a way to bring hope to those suffering from mental illnesses. Those patients need to feel protected. Bryce Abbott, who is the Municipal Judge in Kansas, has tried to find a solution to the dilemma of those adults who seek mental health support in Kansas. They are immigrants who attempted to reveal a way of changing their lives.

Abbot, together with a prosecutor and a defender analyzed the ongoing cases of those who rise this problem in court. A lot of people believe that the perfect refuge is Kansas’ breakthrough mental health court. The action upon the matter was controlled when authorities discovered how to reward those who suffer from mental illnesses. Experts underlined their behavior and the non-violent criminal abuse who also displayed various issues concerning the anti-social behavior or problems at the workplace.

Based on the Topeka Capital-Journal, some of these mentally challenged people could have been arrested for a lot of indictments. In such situations when some judges believe that treatment for their mental health would do more good, they become milder and use another perspective of analysis.

They use a different approach with these law-breakers very different from any other country which confronts with such problems. It’s not easy to see that a person suffering from mental illnesses was convicted of something he has done without his will. These individuals need attentive treatment and care.

A very rare solution applied in these tough cases is the use of the collaboration between the public and the judge to manage the case with discretion. Since 2009, Abbot has claimed that this kind of behavior helped the Wichita Municipal Court’s voluntary side concerned with therapeutic jurisprudence to improve. The authorities observed a decrease in recidivism.

All these actions were financially supported by a grant from the US Department of Justice and continuously sustained by the city. Abbott had a difficult case to discuss in the courtroom, and he struggled to maintain his peace.

The defendant, who was imprisoned at Sedgwick County Jail, tried to make a point by explaining his situation in front of the judge, using injurious words. He did not stop swearing until the judge noticed why he behaved like that and cautiously announced him that he needs to respect some rules. He observed how much frustration was displayed on the defendant’s face.

Abbott has asserted that it is crucial to make the distinction between criminals and persons suffering from mental illnesses who do not choose to be ill and behave as they do.
