quitbitSmoking cigarettes is dangerous and the world is pushing forward in quitting the habit, even if it is harder than one thinks. There are a lot of alternative methods to reduce the number of coffin – nails per day or to completely break free from the addiction, but an extra hand is always welcomed.

Will power, patience, motivation and horrific medical statistics seem to help at some point. But since we spent the last days talking about smart devices, we can’t overlook the latest news regarding interesting smoking – related gadgets that are about to become a reality.

Smokers, meet the Quitbit smart lighter! This device is a digital lighter that keeps track of your cigarette smoking and even limits the number of cigarettes you have per day. The ingenious device is still in its project phase, as it needs Kickstarter funding to turn from theory into an actual product.

How does the Quitbit smart lighter work?

According to the tech reviewers who covered the subject,

You can program the device to allow only a certain number of cigarettes per day at certain intervals. If you go to light another but have reached your limit for that day or time period, it simply won’t work. The $69 device uses a heating element similar to that of a car lighter. It’s equipped with a sensor technology that logs how long it’s being used. It’ll log your usage only if it meets a certain trigger, which is currently rounded out at around 2½ seconds. It’ll also log only one use in the interval of three minutes. This enables it to track only your smoking. So even if you share it with friends or play with it, you won’t have to worry that you’re screwing with the program.

quitbit smart lighterAnother important aspect about the Quitbit smart lighter is that it really is a smart device: it displays your smoking routine into an easy – to – read screen, showing you how many cigarettes you had that day and how much time has passed since your last one.

It is supposed to help you become more aware about the dangers you expose yourself to, as it can’t help you quit smoking per se. And if the statistics don’t kick you right in the habit, the financial data might: the lighter also monitors how much money you’ve saved as you’re cutting back on cigarettes. If this isn’t a good incentive, we don’t know what is.

The Quitbit smart lighter also connects to your iOS or Android phone and delivers the statistics to your handset. If you misplace it, the phone can also help you find it, as it tracks its location.

All in all, the Quitbit looks like a fun gadget to have around. It won’t replace nicotine patches and e-cigarettes, but at least it will give you a clear picture of your addiction.
