Shocking news hit the media today as high power woman and philanthropist Melinda Gates uncovered the results of some surveys supported by her foundation. Rape situation in India is alarming, Melinda Gates says, as her studies show.
Bill Gates’ wife and co-founder of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has spoken for the first time today about sexual abuses Indian women are currently suffering from. The situation has brought to the public eye a disastrous truth.
Women and children are being raped, even inside their own homes on an extremely large scale, making domestic violence rates much higher than the Indian government had thought or stated. Melinda Gates says the situation in India is so dire, that even toddlers are being raped.
This news is coming to us on the background of another shattering story supported by another powerful woman. A few days ago Oscar winning actress Meryl Streep supported the BBC documentary about the case of a girl being raped on a moving bus in India, so that it may win an Academy Award. The film is banned in India, as it depicts the unspeakable sexual assault and death of a young woman who was raped in a moving bus in New Delhi. She was then thrown off the same moving bus and died later in the hospital because of the injuries she sustained.
Meryl Streep’s support of the BBC documentary and Melinda Gates’ surveys spurred an uproar. Ms. Gates states her surveys show that, out of the 75 000 Indian men interviewed, more than half could not actually find anything wrong with assaulting their spouses. More than 40 percent of the women questioned, admitted to having been beaten at least once by their husbands.
But, as far as the truth by numbers is concerned, two facts jump from the survey page and scream into everybody’s consciousness. First, the fact that 54 percent of the Indian women who participated in the survey answered that they see nothing wrong with being beaten by their husbands. They are convinced of the fact that they themselves must have certainly done something wrong and, therefore, have attracted their man’s wrath and physical punishment.
The second dreadful fact that came out of these surveys was the fact that children born to women who are molested either physically or sexually by their husbands, are 21 percent more prone to die before the age of five.
The truth behind both the BBC documentary (India’s Daughter) and the facts brought to light by Melinda Gates speak of India as a country of abuse, violence, neglect, cruelty and absolutely no respect, love or mercy for women or children.
